Polestar 4 SUV outed: Does a rear window and a more practical shape deliver a genuine BMW iX3, Benz GLC and Volvo EX60 fighter?

The emerging all-electric premium mid-size SUV segment is set to boil over next year with the arrival of the Polestar 4 SUV wagon, a more practical five-door EV from the Sino-Swedish brand that will rival the BMW iX3, Mercedes-Benz GLC and Volvo EX60.

Announcing that global sales of the still-unseen SUV, which has so far only officially been teased in an overhead image, will begin on September 2, 2026, Polestar has timed the new Polestar 4 wagon to arrive in Australian showrooms before the end of this year.

The first model to be built at Polestar’s new factory in Busan, South Korea, the new Polestar 4 SUV will be offered alongside the coupe, with both single-motor and dual-motor variants tipped to be available.

The Sino-Swedish brand, which is owned by Geely, has already confirmed the more practical body style will offer a WLTP-verified range of 630km in single-motor rear-wheel drive form, while dual-motor variants will produce 400kW of power.

The wagon version will benefit from the latest Polestar 4 chassis upgrades, which include new springs, fresh dampers and revised anti-roll bars for an improved ride and handling balance.

What’s missing is an upgrade to the 400-volt electrical architecture, which continues to limit efficiency and charging speeds compared with newer 800-volt rivals.

One welcome addition is the inclusion of a conventional rear window – something the coupe lacks, with the driver having to rely on a camera-based digital rear-view mirror to see what’s behind.

The new model’s design may have already been accidentally revealed, with a camouflaged image reportedly briefly published by Polestar Norway before being deleted.

The image, which quickly circulated online, appears to show the new SUV in full side profile and reveals a more conventional roofline and rear body design than the existing Polestar 4 coupe.

Polestar has not confirmed the authenticity of the image, but if genuine it provides the clearest look yet at the more practical new model ahead of its official unveiling.

With pricing and full specifications of the Polestar 4 wagon yet to be revealed, there’s no indication of exactly how expensive it will be, but the most affordable version has been tipped to cost around $80,000.

Polestar 4 Coupe pricing starts at $78,500.

At that money, the Polestar 4 could prove an alternative to high-grade versions of the Tesla Model Y, which continues to lead EV sales Down Under.

Another challenging rival for the Polestar 4 wagon could be fellow Geely brand Zeekr’s latest 7X, which has already been priced from $57,900 plus on-road costs.

Already Polestar’s best-selling model in Australia in coupe form, the Polestar 4 will be joined by the new SUV wagon later this year. The brand will then introduce its all-new replacement for the smaller Polestar 2 in 2027, before rolling out its entry-level compact SUV, the Polestar 7, in 2028.
