Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI performance numbers confirmed: Heavier and slower than ICE but VW guarantees great handling
The Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI has arrived making the first EV in 50 years to carry the car-maker’s famed GTI badge.
Unwrapped just days after the full reveal of the ID. Polo hatch it’s based on, the new GTI follows on from other hot VW EVs that until now have carried the lesser GTX badge.
While the most powerful standard ID. Polo comes with a 155kW, the new ID. Polo GTI ramps that output up to 166kW and 290Nm of torque.

Driving the front wheels, 0-100km/h takes 6.8 seconds before topping out at 175km/h.

In isolation, those figures might sound good, but the current petrol-powered 2.0-litre Turbo Polo GTI is much quicker and can launch to the same performance benchmark in 6.5 seconds before topping out at a far higher 240km/h.
Despite the deficit, the ID. Polo GTI has been promised to offset its 200kg (approx) weight penalty over the petrol hot hatch by offering the GTI’s trademark involving handling, plus agility that has blessed almost every GTI since the 1976 Mk1 Golf GTI.
Featuring a bespoke chassis set-up, the ID. Polo GTI rides on stiffer springs that are combined with adaptive dampers. A limited-slip differential, variable-ratio steering rack, stiffer anti-roll bars and a revised rear torsion bar have all been added.
The latter has new mountings and bushings that aid rigidity without compromising ride quality.

Sitting 15mm lower to the ground with a broader front and rear track, the new ID. Polo GTI rides on large 19-inch alloy wheels and comes with a revised front bumper with a lower honeycomb grille, rear diffuser, side skirts and small tailgate spoiler.
Inside, sport seats, a sportier steering wheel with a red 12 o’clock marker, new ambient lighting, plus fresh skins for the infotainment and digital instrument cluster are all present, with the instrument cluster coming with a display that looks identical to the original Mk1 Golf GTI.

Behind the wheel the ID. Polo GTI comes with new dedicated driving modes, with a large GTI button at the base of the steering wheel that sharpens up the drivetrain and chassis settings and pumps a more invigorating soundtrack into the cabin.

GTI mode also helps unlock and activate the launch control for the quickest getaways.
Options include a 10-speaker premium sound system, a panoramic roof, 12-way electric massage seats and stickier Bridgestone tyres.
Sharing the same MEB+ platform as the regular ID. Polo, the GTI variant only comes with the all-electric hatch’s large 52kWh battery that provides for a WLTP-verified range of up to 424km.
Plugged in, the ID. Polo GTI can only be topped up at a maximum of 105kW, with a 10-80 per cent top-up taking 24 minutes with a fast DC charger.

Twinned with the Cupra Raval VZ that will also share the same high-output 166kW e-motor, the new ID. Polo GTI has been built to rival emerging battery-electric hot hatches like the Alpine A290 and inbound Peugeot e-208 GTI already available in Europe.
In Germany the ID. Polo has been priced from €39,000 ($63,000), with first deliveries set to kick off in Q4 of this year.

Once introduced, a faster ID. Polo GTI Clubsport with 210kW will follow, as well as a flagship all-wheel drive ID. Polo R with as much as 300kW.
