MG4 range reshaped for Australia: Big and small batteries gone, but keen pricing retained

MG has unveiled its updated 2026 MG4 electric hatchback at the Melbourne Motor Show, confirming pricing from $39,990 drive-away as it reshapes its line-up to better target both budget and performance EV buyers.

The refreshed range will now centre on the rear-wheel-drive MG4 Essence 64 and the all-wheel-drive MG4 XPOWER, priced from $39,990 and $47,990 drive-away respectively.

These are significant reductions of several thousand dollars from previous official (non-campiagn) drive-away pricing for the old MG4.

Meanwhile, the new MG4 Urban has been introduced as a lower-cost entry point to the brand’s electric range.

As part of the overhaul, MG has streamlined the MG4 range, dropping 51kWh and long-range 77kWh variants in favour of a simplified structure focused on 64kWh models and the performance flagship.

The MG4 51 had been priced as low as $31,990 drive-away previously and around $36,000 drive-away this year with cashbacks.

The newly introduced MG4 Urban effectively replaces the previous base-grade offering, targeting buyers seeking a more affordable, city-focused EV.

Powering the Essence 64 is a 64kWh lithium iron phosphate battery paired with a 140kW/350Nm rear-mounted motor, delivering up to 452km of WLTP driving range and a 10–80 per cent fast-charging time of around 25 minutes.

The XPOWER continues as the performance leader, using a dual-motor all-wheel-drive set-up producing a combined 320kW and up to 600Nm, enabling a 0–100km/h sprint time of 3.8 seconds and a claimed driving range of up to 405km.

Inside, the MY26 update brings a redesigned cabin with improved materials and a more premium finish, alongside the return of physical controls.

A new 10.25-inch digital instrument display and 12.8-inch central touchscreen headline the technology upgrades, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard across the range.

Additional features include a 360-degree camera system, integrated apps such as Spotify and YouTube, heated front seats and steering wheel, and a boot capacity of 388 litres, expanding to 1164 litres with the rear seats folded.

Externally, the MG4 retains its distinctive design, with updates including new colours, revised aerodynamic elements and 18-inch wheels.

MG says the revised structure – spanning the Urban through to the XPOWER – is designed to broaden its appeal across the EV market, from budget-conscious buyers to those seeking a more driver-focused electric hatch.

Both the updated MG4 and MG4 Urban are backed by MG’s 10-year warranty when serviced within the brand’s dealer network.
