The next Mazda MX-5 will be electrifying

The next Mazda MX-5 will be electrifying, with Mazda to turn to electrification to power its next-gen sports car.

According to new reports, the brand will equip its lightweight sports car with its clever SKYACTIV-X technology to boost power while reducing emissions.

UK publication AutoCar is reporting the next-gen Mazda MX-5, due in 2024, will stick with petrol-powered performance, rather than a plug-in hybrid or full BEV powertrain, but will supplement the ICE engine with the brand’s unique mild-hybrid technology.

Mazda’s SKYACTIV-X spark-controlled compression ignition (SPCCI) system is designed to deliver diesel-like torque while reducing fuel use, and so has the added MX-5 benefit of increasing performance while reducing emissions.

According the the brand, its 2.0-litre SKYACTIV-X engine delivers 30 percent more torque than a traditional petrol engine, and uses up to 20 percent less fuel.

Both of which are winning attributes for a sports car, and given the engine technology adds considerably less weight than a BEV or PHEV powertrain, those performance gains should be very noticeable from behind the wheel.

Mazda has previous confirmed that the next Miata (as the MX-5 is called in the USA) will feature some form of electrification by the end of the decade, but is yet to confirm exactly what kind. One thing is certain, though, the next Mazda MX-5 will be electrifying

“Mazda is seeking to electrify the Miata in an effort to have all models feature a form of electrification by 2030,” a brand spokesperson told US outlet Motor1.

“We will work hard to make it a lightweight, affordable, open two-seater sports car in order to meet the needs of customers.”
