2026 Jaecoo J5 EV Review: What a time to launch an affordable EV! J5 has its weaknesses, but price isn’t one of them

The Jaecoo J5 EV arrives in Australia at a time when demand for affordable electric vehicles is surging.

Rising fuel prices and a growing wave of budget-focused Chinese EVs have created a highly competitive market at the lower end, and the J5 is aimed squarely at that space. As the first fully electric model from Chery spin-off Jaecoo, it promises strong value, generous equipment and enough range to suit everyday use.

On paper, it’s compelling. In reality, the J5 delivers in several key areas – but, like many new entrants, it also raises some questions.

2026 Jaecoo J5 EV price and equipment

The 2026 Jaecoo J5 EV is currently priced at $36,990 drive-away until the end of April, positioning it among the most affordable electric SUVs on sale in Australia.

That puts it in close competition with rivals such as the BYD Atto 2, Leapmotor B10 and MG S5 EV, while being undercut by the incoming GWM Ora 5 SUV.

Even if the promotional pricing ends, the equipment list remains a strong selling point.

Standard exterior features include LED headlights with high-beam assist, roof rails, a rear spoiler, 18-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic glass sunroof with powered blind and a power tailgate.

Inside, the J5 offers dual-zone climate control, synthetic leather trim, six-way powered front seats with heating and ventilation, and a cargo cover. Notably, there is no spare wheel.

Technology is headlined by a 13.2-inch infotainment touchscreen paired with an 8.88-inch digital instrument display. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, along with AM/FM and digital radio, an eight-speaker sound system and conductive smartphone charging. However, there is no built-in satellite navigation.

Safety equipment is extensive, with seven airbags, adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping systems, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and driver monitoring. A 360-degree camera system stands out for its clarity. An ANCAP rating has not yet been confirmed.

Ownership coverage is a highlight, with an eight-year/unlimited kilometre vehicle warranty, matching battery coverage and eight years of roadside assistance. Servicing is required every 12 months or 20,000km, with capped pricing totalling $1520 over eight years.

2026 Jaecoo J5 EV: What we think

The J5 EV’s biggest strength is how well it aligns with its intended purpose.

This is a compact SUV designed primarily for city and suburban use, and in that environment it works well. Its relatively compact dimensions and responsive electric drivetrain make it easy to manoeuvre, while the instant torque delivery gives it a lively feel off the line.

With outputs of 155kW and 288Nm, performance is competitive for the segment, and the ability to adjust drive modes and regenerative braking adds a degree of flexibility.

The driving experience is competent rather than standout. Compared with earlier Chery-derived products, the J5 represents a step forward, with acceptable ride and handling balance and steering that is light and reasonably accurate.

However, the ride can be sharp over rough Australian surfaces, and there is still some of the slightly artificial feel common to electric power steering systems.

Efficiency is another mixed result. The claimed 13.9kWh/100km consumption suggests strong economy, but real-world driving returned higher figures, pointing to a more realistic range of around 350km rather than the official 402km WLTP claim.

Inside, the J5 offers a pleasant and well-presented cabin, with comfortable front seats and a practical layout. Storage is generous, aided by the column-mounted gear selector, and overall usability is solid.

Rear-seat space is more limited. While adequate for shorter occupants, taller passengers may find knee room tight if the front seats are pushed back.

The boot offers 384 litres of capacity, which is competitive for the class, and there is also a small 35-litre front trunk.

Where the J5 falls short is in its controls and refinement.

Like many Chinese EVs, it relies heavily on the touchscreen for key functions, including climate and audio settings. There is a lack of physical controls, which can make everyday use more cumbersome.

Driver assistance systems are better calibrated than some rivals, but still intrusive at times. However, many alerts can be disabled using a simple shortcut.

There are also some ergonomic quirks, including the similarity between the gear selector and indicator stalk, which can lead to confusion.

Charging performance is acceptable, with a claimed 130kW DC fast-charging peak and AC charging of up to 10.3kW three-phase.

2026 Jaecoo J5 EV: Verdict

The Jaecoo J5 EV makes a strong case as an affordable entry point into electric SUV ownership.

It offers plenty of equipment, competitive performance and a driving experience that is at least on par with expectations for the segment. For urban buyers looking for a practical, low-cost EV, it fits the brief.

However, there are still some rough edges, particularly around usability, ride quality and real-world efficiency.

More importantly, there are the unknowns. As a new brand in Australia, Jaecoo’s long-term reliability, aftersales support and resale value remain unproven.

Taken purely on its merits, the J5 EV is a solid contender in the budget EV space. As a purchase, it comes with a degree of risk that buyers will need to consider.
