Revealed! Every new Toyota and Lexus EV due by 2030
Toyota’s stunning reveal of its $100 billion EV plans and 30 battery electric vehicles it plans to roll out over the next few years is an incredible statement of intent.
Far from being BEV recalcitrants, Toyota and its luxury brand Lexus are stating openly their intent to become players in the electrified automotive revolution now upon us.
Here you can check out each of the cars, trucks and SUVs Toyota’s leader Akio Toyoda proudly showed off in the company’s sweeping December 14 statement.
As previously reported, some will be all-new models – including the brand’s bZ (or Beyond Zero) range that will include a mid-size SUV, a small city-friendly crossover, a mid-size sedan, a sports car and a three-row, seven-seat large SUV – others will be electrified versions of familiar nameplates, with what appears to be a Tundra or HiLux pick-up preview among them.
All of which will join the five-seat mid-sized SUV, the bZ4X, which will be available as a single motor two-wheel drive or dual motor all-wheel drive, giving the top selling brand a rival to the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Polestar 2 and upcoming Tesla Model Y and Kia EV6.
So without further ado, let’s get into this smorgasbord of new electric vehicles from Toyota and Lexus, most of which will be launched in “the next few years”.
Toyota bZ Small Crossover
What we know: Toyota is promising standard-setting 12kWh/100km consumption for this “small battery EV with a comfortable interior designed with Europe and Japan in mind”. Australia? Would be the most affordable bZ if it got here.
Toyota bZ Compact SUV
What we know: Pronounced wheel arches, sleek style and a shark grin give this EV SUV a sportier stance than the ICE-powered C-HR and RAV4. Could be badged bZ3X.
“This midsize SUV has a beautiful silhouette that presages a new era for battery EVs,” said Toyoda. “At just a single glance, its styling can invite you to want to get in and go for a drive.”
Toyota bZ SDN
What we know: A potential Tesla Model 3 rival that is a hell of a lot sexier than a Camry or Corolla. Predicted to go on-sale in 2022 in China fitted with BYD Blade battery tech.
“This is a midsize sedan that meets customers’ expectations for a first car,” said Toyoda. That suggests it will be affordable.
Toyota bZ Large SUV
What we know: It’s a big electric SUV that’s expected to be badged bZ5X. Squint a bit and you could be looking at a future Kluger seven-seat SUV.
Lexus Electrified Sport
What we know: Akio Toyoda made clear this was the LFA supercar reborn, but without the V10 engine! “Lexus will develop a next-generation battery EV sports car that inherits the driving taste, or the secret sauce, of the performance cultivated via the development of the LFA,” he said.
It is expected to debut with solid state batteries – so the second half of the 2020s – and boast a 700km range. Expect 0-100km/h acceleration in the low two seconds bracket. In other words, it will be a tech flagship and one that takes the EV fight to Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche.
Lexus RZ
What we know: To share the Toyota bZ4X’s e-TNGA architecture and to be designated RX 450e, the first RZ will be unveiled in the first half of 2022. Lexus has already embarked on a teaser campaign for an EV set to play catch up with the existing luxury electric SUVs.
Lexus Electrified Sedan
What we know: What’s happened to the spindle grille? Clearly, EV ushers in a new design era for Lexus. And the electrified sedan is the closest thing to an EV replacement for the Lexus IS sedan that recently departed Australian shores.
Lexus Electrified SUV
What we know: Clear links here to Lexus RZ’s styling but pumped up to a larger size with three rows of seats available inside. Also has some styling traits shared with bZ5X.
Toyota Sports EV
What we know: Styling and inlets in front of rear wheels suggest mid-engine mounting – only there is no engine. The basic concept has hints of the old MR2 interspersed with design touches that wouldn’t look out of place on a McLaren. Note the targa top.
Toyota Crossover EV
What we know: Hatch-esque profile with crossover design touches. Could be a new-gen Corolla Cross.
Toyota Compact Cruiser EV
What we know: Definitely the sort of vehicle that could find favour in LandCruiser-loving Australia. Mini 4×4 pays tribute to the iconic FJ 4×4. The next challenge is to convince Toyota to create a bigger one…
Toyota Pickup EV
What we know: There are dozens of promised electric utes from brands as diverse as Tesla, Rivian Hummer, Chevrolet and Ford – and here’s proof Toyota intends to join the party. Hints of HiLux and Tundra dual cab models to come.
Toyota Small SUEV
What we know: The EV SUV in a pint-sized package. A potential Yaris Cross or C-HR replacement?
(insert blasphemous expletives here) are they ugly or what ????!!!
