MG 07 flagship sedan arrives: Electric rival for Tesla Model 3 and BYD Seal is all-new and full of tech

SAIC-owned MG Motor has revealed a new flagship electrified mid-size sedan called the MG 07 that will sit above the current MG7 and below the IM5 in the brand’s fast-growing line-up.

Due on sale later this year, the new Tesla Model 3 and BYD Seal rival adopts a dramatic fastback silhouette that appears heavily inspired by the Porsche Taycan.

Up front, there is a pair of slim C-shaped headlamps, with the upper section integrated into a clamshell-style bonnet.

Reflecting its positioning against more expensive sedans such as the BMW i3, the new MG 07 features frameless doors, Porsche-inspired fender vents, active grille shutters and advanced aerodynamic elements that hint a high-performance version could also be on the way.

Claimed to ride on SAIC’s next-generation NEV architecture, the Chinese car-maker has yet to release full technical details of the MG 07, but has confirmed it will be offered with both plug-in hybrid and all-electric powertrains.

Other highlights include the first application of the brand’s new Momenta R7 Level 2+ autonomous driving system, which uses a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor to enable advanced hands-free driving functions in urban environments, as well as automated parking capability.

MG says the system is designed to emulate the behaviour of an experienced and defensive driver in a bid to improve safety.

There is also no word yet on whether the MG 07 will adopt the company’s latest semi-solid-state battery technology, which is expected to deliver longer driving range and ultra-fast charging capability.

Full details are expected to be revealed shortly, but MG has confirmed the MG 07 will be priced from 150,000 yuan (about $30,500) in China.
