Hottest Ford Mustang Mach-E electric SUV unveiled

Ford has rolled out an even faster version of its battery electric Ford Mustang Mach-E.

Dubbed the GT Performance Edition, the five-door reaches 60mph (or 96km/h) in a claimed 3.5 seconds.

That’s well over a second faster than a traditional V8-powered Mustang GT can achieve.

The Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition was announced at the same time as Ford confirmed the former flagship of the line-up, the GT, would get a performance boost.

The GT now makes 358kW from its two e-motors (one on each axle, making it an all-wheel drive), up 16kW from the launch figures in 2019.

The GT Performance shares that number but makes 860Nm, 30Nm more than the GT.

Right there is a key reason the GT Performance is 0.3 sec faster to 60mph than the GT.

“We already pushed the envelope by creating an electric vehicle with the pony badge, so it’s only natural that we push it even further,” said Darren Palmer, global director, battery electric vehicles, Ford Motor Company.

“Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition not only gives you the added performance you expect from the GT name, but accentuates the thrill with the responsiveness of an all-electric powertrain.”

The battery capacity remains unchanged at 88kWh, but the GT Performance’s added speed reduces its range by 24km to 378km, according to the tough US EPA test cycle.

It’s not only the straight-line handling that gets a boost. The GT Performance also boasts adjustable magnetorheological (MagneRide) dampers, bigger Brembo brakes and 20-inch machine-faced Ebony Black wheels with 245/45R20 Pirelli tyres to help in the twisty stuff.

There are also special badges, Ford Performance seats with metallic stitching and an aluminium instrument panel.

The Mustang Mach-E range goes on-sale in the USA from late 2020. The GT and Performance Edition arrive mid-2021.

While Ford Australia has not confirmed if the Mustang Mach-E is coming here, its chief engineer, Ron Heiser, has previously told media it will be sold in Australia. It makes sense given the Mach-E has been confirmed for the UK, a right-hand drive market.

Timing for the Mach-E’s Australian on-sale date is yet to be announced.
