GMC Hummer X concepts unveiled: Ute and SUV preview potential all-electric Jeep Wrangler crushers
GM has celebrated the opening of a new Californian design studio with two new all-electric concepts that could one day soon battle the Jeep Wrangler SUV and Gladiator ute.
Named the GMC Hummer X, the two new mid-size vehicles have been created to slot into the range beneath the brand’s huge 5.5m-long GMC Hummer EV pick-up and slightly smaller Hummer EV SUV (5.0m).
Catering for serious off-road enthusiasts, the new Hummer X measures 4782mm long, 1853mm wide and 1853mm tall, with a 2946mm wheelbase that almost matches the Wrangler for length, while being 20mm narrower.

With a generous 334mm ground clearance and ultra-short front and rear overhangs, the SUV has a very respectable 44-degree approach angle and a 46-degree departure angle, plus a 30.9-degree breakover angle on large 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 37-inch tyres.
The larger Hummer X Truck ute, meanwhile, is 5265mm long with a lengthy 3319mm wheelbase.
On fractionally more modest 35-inch Goodyear rubber wrapped around 22-inch alloys, ground clearance drops to 316mm. The approach angle remains competitive at 41.5 degrees, while the departure angle falls to 29.7 degrees and the breakover angle to a less impressive 24.9 degrees.

To cope with hard off-road use, both the ute and SUV gain underbody armour, Multimatic dampers and removable fender flares.
Helping the driver deep in the bush is a scout drone that can fly ahead and scope out what’s coming up, projecting a livestream onto the car’s stackable screens, which offer up to seven displays.
Created to be highly configurable, GMC engineers say its new Flex Fab production process will allow for “fast, small-batch, on-demand production”, which is thought to rely on 3D-printed parts.
Boosting ease of repair, instead of using adhesives to glue the body together, the Hummer X employs mechanical fasteners. The head restraint backing, seatbacks and dashboard ends, meanwhile, are made from recycled car bumpers.
The show cars boast Morse code imprints on the floor mats and sport tyres that spell out: “The courage to get lost leads to new discoveries”.

There’s no word on whether either the SUV or ute will come with the Hummer EV’s mighty triple-motor set-up that produces an incredible 619kW and 1400Nm of torque, but it’s more likely that the fastest versions would produce around 466kW and 1000Nm from a dual-motor powertrain.
It’s almost certain the Hummer X won’t come with the enormous 212kWh battery pack, for cost reasons.
Combined with a new-generation GM Ultium battery, the production version of the Hummer X ute and SUV should be able to cover up to 500km, even with their bluff front styling.
It’s thought the Hummer X might also gain a new range-extender hybrid powertrain engineered to fit the Ultium architecture, which could offer an EV-only range of more than 200km.
Despite looking showroom-ready, GM insists neither the SUV nor ute is intended for production and is instead a “testbed for new technologies”.
