Electric MG roadster previewed

The famous MG two-door roadster could be reborn as an electric vehicle.

Now owned by Chinese automotive giant SAIC, but still with strong British roots, MG has shown these preview sketches of a drop-top concept dubbed the Cyberster that is due to be revealed later this month in China.

Details are limited about the Cyberster, which was designed at MG Motor’s London studio, but the expectation it will have its electric motor mounted up-front and drive the rear wheels.

The tip is it will deliver sub four second 0-100km/h sprints and be able to cover 500km on a single charge. Beyond that, details get pretty sketchy.

MG has promoted the car’s 5G connectivity and Level 3 autonomous capability, but that’s just about all there is.

As yet, it hasn’t said whether the concept will translate into a production car, or whether hybrids or pure ICE versions will be offered as well.

It would be great if it did. The Mazda MX-5 needs a proper rival and it would be cool if it was powered by electricity!

Of course, MG has a rich history of two-seat two-door sports cars, although since being revived by SAIC it has focused on small passenger cars and SUVs.

This is not the first electric concept MG has revealed in recent times. Back in 2017 it showed off the E-Motion four-seat coupe and predicted a 2020 on-sale date. That has now been pushed back to 2021.

Of course, MG’s first foray into EVs in Australia will be the ZS EV compact SUV, which arrives late in 2020.
