Cheaper Cupra Tavascan arrives: New entry-level EV cuts entry-price to fight Tesla Model Y, BYD Sealion 7

Cupra has lowered the cost of entry to its flagship electric SUV, introducing a new rear-wheel-drive Tavascan V priced from $55,490 before on-road costs—around $10,000 less than the updated and price-hiked Endurance model.

Due in Australia from late August, the new variant becomes the most affordable Tavascan.

It slots beneath the updated Endurance and VZ as Cupra looks to broaden the appeal of its Volkswagen ID.5-based electric SUV to better tackle big selling rivals such as the Tesla Model Y and BYD Sealion 7.

Unlike the larger-battery Endurance, the new Tavascan V swaps to a 58kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery and a 140kW rear-mounted electric motor, delivering a claimed WLTP driving range of 414km. DC fast charging is capped at 105kW, allowing a claimed 10-80 per cent recharge in around 26 minutes.

Despite becoming the entry model, Cupra says the Tavascan V retains much of the equipment previously reserved for higher grades, including heated and memory front seats, a Sennheiser premium audio system, a 360-degree camera and 20-inch alloy wheels.

The existing Tavascan Endurance continues with its 77kWh battery and 210kW rear-mounted motor, retaining a claimed 520km WLTP driving range. For MY26 it gains the previously optional Interior Package as standard, along with launch control.

That helps explain why its price climbs from $60,990 to $66,490 before on-road costs.

The flagship all-wheel-drive Tavascan VZ remains unchanged mechanically, combining dual electric motors producing 250kW with a claimed 509km WLTP driving range. It also gains launch control as standard.

Its price rises from $74,490 to $75,490.

Across the range, Cupra has introduced one of the most significant technology upgrades since the Tavascan launched in Australia. The previous 5.3-inch driver’s display has been replaced by a larger 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, while the controversial haptic steering wheel controls have been ditched in favour of conventional physical buttons following customer feedback.

Other updates include redesigned wireless phone charging, electrically adjustable air vents, speed sign recognition and software improvements for the infotainment and audio systems. Midnight Black Metallic also joins the colour palette as a no-cost option.

The updated range follows a mixed start for the Spanish-built electric SUV in Australia. While the Tavascan undercut rivals such as the Tesla Model Y at launch and earned praise for its design and driving dynamics, it narrowly missed out on a five-star ANCAP safety rating, receiving four stars under the latest testing protocols.
