Hot Cupra Tindaya EV locked in: Spanish brand eyes up all-electric BMW iX3 and Mercedes GLC with all-new flagship mid-size SUV

Cupra has given the go-ahead to build its most ambitious vehicle yet, based on last year’s wild Cupra Tindaya concept.

According to Autocar, work is already underway to create a production version of the 2025 Munich motor show concept that stunned with its sharp, rakish and futuristic design.

Built to sit above the current Tavascan and Terramar, it was originally thought the 4720mm-long Tindaya would be a replacement for the Formentor.

However, it has now been revealed as a more upmarket premium rival for the latest battery-powered BMW iX3 and Volvo EX60.

Tipped to be priced from around $100,000 plus on-road costs, the new Tindaya will easily rank among the most expensive Cupra models yet.

No timeline has been given for its arrival by Cupra CEO Markus Haupt, other than to say it will be on sale in “some years”.

However, according to the Barcelona-based brand’s boss, it will be a showcase for the firm’s latest design and technology.

The hints at advanced technology suggest the Tindaya will skip current platforms and become one of the first cars based on the Volkswagen Group’s next-generation Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), which will also underpin the Mk9 Volkswagen Golf.

If so, expect the Tindaya to be the fastest-charging Cupra yet thanks to its 800-volt electrical architecture, while new supercomputers and Volkswagen’s latest software should ensure class-leading processing power for the most sophisticated autonomous driving technologies.

With the Volkswagen Group already announcing that the first vehicle to use the SSP platform is not due to arrive until 2029 at the earliest, it is thought the Cupra Tindaya will be scheduled to launch around that time.
