Denza is BYD’s luxury-focused brand – as Lexus is to Toyota – and the B5 is its most affordable model.

The boxy wagon is priced from $74,990 plus on-road costs for the standard model – known simply as B5 – or $79,990 for the better equipped B5 Leopard that also has more off-road hardware.

Each is powered by Denza’s Dual Mode Off-road (DMO) plug-in hybrid drivetrain developing a combined 400kW and 760Nm.

The front electric motor makes 200kW/360Nm while the rear makes 285kW/400Nm.

The set-up pairs those motors with a 135kW/260Nm 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine acting primarily as a generator, backed by a 31.8kWh lithium-ferrous phosphate (LFP) battery offering up to 90km of electric driving on the WLTP cycle.

Once the battery has been depleted it reverts to hybrid propulsion with claimed consumption of 10.9 litres per 100km, which translates to 850km of combined range from the 90-litre tank and high voltage battery pack.

Despite being the entry point to the brand, the B5 still promises serious off-road credentials.

Both versions include front and rear locking differentials as well as software controls that can provide the same functionality as a locking centre diff (there’s no mechanical link between the front and rear wheels, but the computer can spin both motors at the same speed).

There’s also double-wishbone suspension and up to 310mm of ground clearance for the Leopard with its adjustable-height hydraulic suspension system that raises the ride height by 90mm.

That suspension lift – part of the DiSus-P adaptive damper system – also increases the wading depth to 790mm for the Leopard.

Tow capacity is rated at 3000kg braked with a 12-pin plug and tow hardware included as standard equipment.

Inside, the B5 delivers a tech-heavy cabin, headlined by a 15.6-inch central infotainment screen, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, Devialet 16-speaker audio, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, dual-zone climate control, and even a refrigerator/hotbox in the centre console. There’s also real leather trim.

Safety kit is extensive, featuring a 360-degree camera system, adaptive cruise control, emergency braking, fatigue monitoring, rear cross-traffic braking and more.

The flagship B5 Leopard adds 20-inch wheels (up from 18s) and adjustable dampers, Nappa leather, ventilated and heated rear seats, a head-up display, and enhanced exterior treatment aimed at buyers wanting a more premium or adventure-focused look.

There’s seating for five people over two rows.

While it’s not much smaller than a Toyota Prado externally that seating configuration makes it a more natural rival to five-seat SUVs (although there are five-seat versions of the Prado).

Denza says Australian deliveries of the B5 will commence late in January, 2026.

Denza will initially launch with four dealerships – one each in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth – but plans to cover all states and territories with at least 25 outlets by the end of 2026.
