With more SUVs sold than traditional passenger cars, it’s amazing it took the forward-thinking electric car makers longer to unleash their high riding wagons.
But there’s an impressive selection on offer.
5. Tesla Model X
It’s all about doors with the Model X. Those Falcon Wing rear doors add theatre to the school drop off, using sensors to gracefully rise while missing any unwanted contact. Not cheap, though, even if the technology and three rows of seating add to the appeal.
4. Jaguar I-Pace
The I-Pace is a bold ground-up design that capitalises on the unique components of an electric vehicle, in turn changing the way an SUV is imagined. That it manages some respectable off-road performance underpins the depth of engineering, albeit at the expense of rear passenger comfort.

3. Mercedes-Benz EQC
The EQC doesn’t forge much in the way of new ground by electric vehicle standards, instead focusing on getting every component just right. Sure, it’s an expensive five-seat SUV, but with near-AMG levels of performance it provides a compelling case for going electric.

The first electric car from Chinese manufacturer MG comes with one big hook: it’s the most affordable electric vehicle on sale in Australia. There are areas of improvement, but it’s a game changer for EVs.

1. Audi e-Tron 50 and 55 Quattro
Audi was relatively late to the EV party but it’s come out swinging with the e-Tron. Spacious and comfortable, it’s also terrific to drive and comes with optional cameras in lieu of mirrors.
