$500 deposits for Polestar 2 ahead of early-2022 deliveries

Polestar has started taking $500 refundable deposits for the 2 that has aspirations of breaking the Tesla Model 3 stranglehold on the EV market when first deliveries start in February 2022.

The Polestar 2 is priced from $64,600.46 drive-away in NSW and $64,737.10 in Victoria for the Standard Range Single Motor version, before any government rebates or incentives or option packs.

As with the Tesla Model 3, there’s no haggling on pricing because you’re buying direct from head office rather than a dealer.

Dealer delivery for the Polestar 2 is set at $1500 nation-wide, undercutting Tesla slightly (there’s a $1375 delivery fee and $150 order fee, for a total of $1525).

But differing stamp duty around the country mean a wide pricing spread of more than $4000 on some models depending on where you’re buying the car (the same with most luxury cars on the market).

Western Australia is the most expensive place to buy a Polestar 2 and Tasmania is the cheapest – at least before government incentives are factored in.

EV buyers in NSW can claim a $3000 rebate on that as well as dodge $2170 in stamp duty. That would make the entry-level Single Motor 2 $59,430.46.

Victorian buyers can pocket a $3000 rebate for a drive-away price of $61,737.10 – but they’ll start paying 2.5 cents in road user chargers when they drive the car out of the dealership.

Stepping up to the Long Range Single Motor adds a bit over $5000 and the Long Range Dual Motor a bit over $5K again.

There are also three option packs available, depending on the model. The Pilot Pack is $5000 and adds a 360-degree camera, blind spot warning, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, headlights that steer around corners and rear auto braking.

A $6000 Plus Pack brings a heat pump, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, panoramic sunroof, wireless phone charging, vegan trim (called WeaveTech), wood trim, fully electric front seats and a 13-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.

The Dual Motor can also be optioned with an $8000 Performance Pack that gets 20-inch forged alloy wheel with Continental SportContact 6 tyres, Bembo four-piston brakes and cross-drilled discs, brake calipers painted gold and Ohlins manually adjustable dampers.

Polestar is embarking on a roadshow involving 12 cars to introduce prospective buyers to a brand many haven’t heard of.

It will involve temporary activation locations in Sydney (Bondi Beach), Melbourne (Queensbridge Square), Brisbane (King George Square) and the Gold Coast (Pacific Fair) before the brand commits to permanent “Spaces” in all capital cities except Darwin.

Polestar says it has had about 3000 expressions of interest and requests for test drives.

“The demand we’re seeing for Polestar 2 test drives Australia-wide has exceeded even our most ambitious estimates, which is testament to the growing interest in electric vehicles locally, and the need for greater consumer choice in the market,” says the Head of Polestar Australia Samantha Johnson.

Over the next few years Polestar has promised to expand its range with two new SUVs and a GT four-door.
