GWM Ora 5 SUV Aussie price and spec confirmed: Electric SUV will be one of the cheapest EVs on-sale, undercutting BYD Atto 2

GWM has confirmed super-sharp pricing for its new all-electric ORA 5 SUV ahead of its Australian launch, with the small SUV set to arrive in June from $33,990 drive-away.

That pricing means the ORA 5 is one of Australia’s cheapest EVs and the cheapest SUV, undercutting the $31,990 plus on-road costs BYD Atto 2 once ORCs are accounted for.

But while promising the arrival of the 5 signals the start of an expansion of its BEV line-up in Australia, GWM has at the same time axed the smaller ORA hatch from its line-up.

Revealed at the Melbourne Motor Show, the ORA 5 will be powered by a front-mounted electric motor producing 150kW and 260Nm.

Energy is supplied by a 58.3kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, delivering a claimed driving range of up to 430km (WLTC).

Charging capability includes DC fast charging at up to 120kW, allowing a 30 to 80 per cent recharge in around 20 minutes under optimal conditions, while vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality provides up to 6kW of external power.

The new SUV sits in the highly competitive small SUV segment but is larger than the outgoing ORA hatch, measuring 4471mm long with a 2720mm wheelbase, contributing to improved cabin space and practicality.

Inside, the ORA 5 introduces GWM’s latest ‘Coffee OS’ infotainment system, centred around a 14.6-inch touchscreen with wireless smartphone connectivity and over-the-air update capability.

A 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster is also fitted, along with a range of driver assistance and safety features including adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking and a 360-degree camera system.

Two grades will be offered at launch, with the entry-level Lux priced from $33,990 drive-away and the higher-spec Ultra from $36,990 drive-away.

Despite its larger size and upgraded technology, GWM says the ORA 5 is positioned in line with the outgoing hatch, reinforcing its focus on affordability.

The ORA 5 is also expected to play a key role in GWM’s broader strategy to expand its EV presence in Australia, with additional ORA models planned through 2026 and into 2027.\
