BYD Shark 6 expansion revealed: Cab chassis and new Performance flagship boost top-selling PHEV ute

BYD has expanded its Shark 6 ute line-up in Australia with new variants including an entry-level cab-chassis and a more powerful flagship priced from $62,900.

The two new models bookend the existing Shark 6 dual cab that has proved a big seller since its late 2024 launch.

The move broadens the appeal of the Shark 6 range, handing BYD the opportunity to target tradies and fleets as well as private buyers through its three-model line-up.

The new Shark 6 Dynamic Cab-Chassis becomes the most affordable variant, priced from $55,900 plus on-roads, while the existing Shark 6 Premium continues at $57,900.

A new range-topping Shark 6 Performance has also been added, priced from $62,900.

Designed with trade use in mind, the cab-chassis variant is available with an optional heavy-duty alloy tray developed with Ironman 4×4, featuring integrated tie-down points and lockable storage.

All variants continue to use BYD’s Dual Mode Off-Road (DMO) plug-in hybrid system, combining a turbocharged petrol engine with front and rear electric motors and a lithium iron phosphate Blade battery.

The Dynamic Cab-Chassis and Premium share a 1.5-litre turbocharged set-up producing a combined 321kW and 650Nm, while the new Performance flagship upgrades to a 2.0-litre turbo system delivering 350kW and 700Nm.

Performance figures are strong for the segment, with the 1.5-litre variants capable of a claimed 0-100km/h time of 5.7 seconds, while the Performance reduces that to 5.5 seconds.

Towing capacity has also been expanded, with the Performance variant offering up to 3500kg braked towing, compared to 2500kg for the Dynamic and Premium models.

All Shark 6 variants feature all-wheel drive and offer the ability to operate in pure electric mode for shorter trips, with hybrid modes designed to optimise efficiency and performance across longer distances.

The expanded line-up also introduces new off-road capability for the Performance variant, including a dedicated ‘Crawl Mode’ designed for low-speed terrain such as rocks and steep inclines.

This feature is expected to be rolled out to other variants via an over-the-air update later.

Across the range, the Shark 6 continues to offer features such as vehicle-to-load capability with up to 6.6kW output, multiple power outlets and a suite of advanced driver assistance systems, alongside a five-star ANCAP safety rating.

BYD Australia Chief Operating Officer Stephen Collins said the expansion of the Shark 6 lineup will allow more Australians to enjoy ownership of a Dual Mode (DM) Super Hybrid new energy vehicle that’s right for a range of requirements.

“The BYD Shark 6 has redefined what Australians can expect from a modern ute,” Mr Collins said.

“By expanding to three distinct models, we’re giving customers more choice without compromise – whether it’s a Super Hybrid that is a capable workhorse, a family all-rounder, or made for serious towing and performance.”
