At $34,990 plus on-road costs the BYD Seal 6 Touring Premium is the cheapest wagon currently on sale in Australia.

The launch is significant in the context of BYD’s broader expansion in Australia including its increased focus on gaining fleet sales.

Both Seal 6 variants use BYD’s latest DM 5.0 plug-in hybrid system, pairing a 1.5-litre Atkinson-cycle petrol engine with an electric motor and the company’s Blade battery technology.

BYD claims a combined driving range of more than 1000km under test conditions, with WLTP-equivalent estimates suggesting up to 1400km for the Sedan Essential and around 1300km for the Touring Premium.

The BYD Seal 6 – in both sedan and wagon forms – is aiming to take on the Toyota Camry.

Electric-only driving capability differs between the two models, with the Sedan Essential’s 10.08kWh battery delivering a claimed 55km of WLTP electric range, while the Touring Premium’s larger 19kWh battery increases that figure to around 100km.

The Touring variant is expected to play a key role in broadening the Seal 6’s appeal, offering up to 670 litres of cargo capacity, expanding to 1535 litres with the rear seats folded, along with features such as roof rails and a powered tailgate to improve practicality.

Safety features include seven airbags and a range of driver assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking and blind spot detection.
