Genesis is betting big on EVs in Australia: Three new electric vehicles to launch in next 12 months

Genesis is betting big on EVs in Australia, with the relatively new premium brand promising to launch three new EV models in the first half of 2022.

The brand – the premium arm of Hyundai and Korea’s answer to BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi – remains relatively new in Australia, with a handful of ICE-powered models currently sold here.

But Genesis is clearly hopeful it will be able to carve a new niche for itself in the EV space, with plans afoot to launch three BEVs in the next 12 months.

While the brand is yet to confirm exactly what EVs they will be, one of them will surely be the Electrified G80 recently revealed.

Based on the large G80 sedan, the Electrified G80 replaces petrol engines with twin electric motors. Each motor makes 136kW and 350Nm for a combined 272kW and 700Nm, unlocking a sprint to 100km/h in 4.9 seconds.

And we can hope that another will be the production version of the stunning X Concept, an electric luxury GT revealed earlier this year.

Genesis is also working on various electric SUVs. One likely contender would be the just-revealed GV70; parent company Hyundai has even registered the names eGV70, eGV80 and eGV90.

But time will tell. One thing we do know? Genesis is betting big on EVs in Australia

“The opportunity for electric is huge. All the barriers to getting into EVs are disappearing,” Genesis Australia marketing manager, Stewart Parnaby, has told us.
