Genesis GV60 electric SUV: A closer look

Genesis has released more images of its upcoming electric SUV, the GV60.

Pictures of a white car give a clearer look – and more angles – of the crucial EV newcomer ahead of its launch in Australia in the first half of 2022.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, it looks identical in white as it does in the greeny-yellow hue Hyundai chose as the first public outing for the car that looks set to compete with the Mercedes-Benz EQA and Volvo XC40 Pure Electric.

But they at least allow a better look at the LED integrated into the rear spoiler and the lower bumper that integrates bumps that look like faux exhaust outlets.

Genesis is also clearly proud of the proportions and cleanliness of design, which goes against the latest iterations from parent company Hyundai with models such as the Tucson (an SUV brimming with creases and sharp angles). The press release that accompanied the new GV60 images claimed the body was “seamless and minimal without undercuts or character lines” and with short front and rear overhangs, taking advantage of the bespoke EV architecture beneath.

And Genesis appears to be talking up what it believes is an understated design, saying “the GV60’s subdued inner confidence breaks from the loud performance aesthetics of the past”.

There is one break to the keep-it-clean look, though, and that’s the triangular chrome wedge that breaks up the coupe-inspired flow towards the rear of the car.

It’s a distinctive look, and one that now has a name as the “Volt DLO”, or daylight opening. Being the young and trendy new kid on the block, Genesis says it’s “signalling that there are no rules or boundaries written in the EV era”.

It also helps create a more distinctive look, one Genesis describes it as “the new shape of performance”.

Although no official word yet on exactly what or how big that performance will be.

Being based on the E-GMP platform that also underpins the upcoming Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5, it will clearly share plenty with them.

That means the choice of an all-wheel drive system with dual electric motors and, in the case of the Kia EV6, up to 430kW and 740Nm. And, down the track, expect even more; Hyundai is working on an even higher performance N version of its Ioniq 5 – the Ioniq 5 N – that could have close to 500kW.

Single-motor rear-drive versions could also be on the cards, helping keep the entry price of the GV60 down.

Inside, we get a closer look at the “crystal sphere” that is used to select gears. Genesis says the rotating glass sphere has its own mood lighting and that it is a “safety feature” because it lets you know when the vehicle is turned on.
