BYD Atto 3 EV Aussie pricing, delivery and details revealed

The much-anticipated BYD Atto 3 electric SUV has been priced from as low as $44,990 drive-away in Australia ahead of first deliveries to customers in July.

That pricing is for the entry-level model with a smaller battery and only in Tasmania, with pricing rising beyond $47,000 in Victoria and NSW (go to the bottom of this story for full state-by-state pricing around Australia).

Despite claiming to be the cheapest EV on sale in Australia, it just misses out.

The other model in the range BYD Atto 3 with a bigger battery and longer range that starts at $47,990.

The sharp pricing means the Atto 3 will benefit from the EV rebates, discount and incentives offered by various Australian state and territory governments.

The right-hand drive renamed BYD Yuan Plus compact five-seat SUV had its Australian launch at the first BYD Experience Centre (a small dealership) in the Sydney suburb of Darlinghurst tonight.

The smaller Dolphin hatchback – renamed Atto 2 – was also confirmed for Australia and is due to be here in December.

Orders for the Atto 3 were initially due to start late in 2021 but have only just commenced, with first deliveries still months away; BYD still has to get the car certified for sale locally and register the Atto 3 name locally.

Through the EVdirect website the company is taking $1000 refundable deposits.

The Tassie price starting point means the Atto 3 lines up exactly against the MG ZS EV, which is currently the cheapest electric vehicle sold in Australia. The ZS EV is currently unavailable in Australia as MG awaits the imminent arrival of an updated model.

But the Atto 3 is delivers more range and faster charging, although the MG will be significantly upgraded later this year.

The boss of EVDirect, Luke Todd, described the Atto3 as the “most attractive car on the market, not just the EV space”.

“We can produce 15,000 of these cars per annum,” he added. “We want to announce we’re a serious player.

“We’re launching up to seven vehicles between now and the end of 2023”.

That seven counts the two Atto 3 and Atto 2 that is due late in 2002.

“We are here for the long haul,” said Todd. “We now have $200 million funding for our business via a green bond.”

Todd revealed retired Socceroo superstar Tim Cahill was a part-owner of the business and in the management team.
