Unveiled: The new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door EV has so much tech it makes the Porsche Taycan look very yesterday

The 860kW Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe has finally been unwrapped, with the four-door hypercar-humbling sedan setting new highs for power, performance and ultra-fast charging in the emerging all-electric super sedan class.

Capable of launching from 0-100km/h in just 2.4 seconds and reaching 300km/h, the new state-of-the-art powertrain combines a 106kWh battery that can be topped up beyond 600kW, adding up to 460km of range in around 10 minutes, with a 10-80 per cent charge taking little more than 11 minutes.

On sale in Europe in the second half of this year, the wild Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe has yet to be locked in for an arrival Down Under.

But the Porsche Taycan and Lotus Emeya fighter could be here before the end of this year with pricing expected from around $400,000.

The first car to be based on the AMG.EA architecture that will soon be shared with a super-SUV to battle the Porsche Cayenne Turbo, the new AMG GT measures in at 5940mm long, 1960mm wide and stands at just 1400mm tall, with a long 3000mm wheelbase.

Those dimensions make it longer and a little taller, but narrower than the Taycan. The newer Benz EV is also no lightweight, with a kerbweight of 2460kg, but the replacement for the V8-powered GT 4-Door Coupe of the same name has a much lower centre of gravity and boasts three pioneering discus-shaped axial-flux motors.

Despite being only around 80mm wide (each) at the rear and 90mm thick up-front, the extremely compact energy-dense motors provide sophisticated torque vectoring across the rear axle and are much lighter than the usual barrel-shaped radial-flux motors.

The rear motors rev to 13,000rpm, while the front can spin up to a dizzying 15,000rpm that means there’s no need for a two-speed transmission, while trick silicon-carbide inverters manage energy efficiency at high load.

The single front motor only acts as a boost unit, adds extra traction if needed and disconnects when not in use to reduce drag.

In some markets an entry GT 55 will also be offered. It will produce 600kW and can still launch from 0-100km/h in 2.8 second.

But it’s the headline-grabbing GT 63 that raises the bar with 860kW and 2000Nm, out-muscling the 801kW Porsche Taycan Turbo GT and the 663kW Lotus Emeya 900 Sport.

In regular use, AMG GT owners only have around 529kW, with the final burst of power available for up to 63 seconds.

Instead of borrowing its battery pack from an existing Benz, AMG’s quickest sedan ever gets a new powerpack that gains directly cooled cylindrical cells that prevent any thermal derating.

Providing a long range of up to 697km, the new AMG GT can travel 16km further than a less powerful Taycan with the Performance Battery.

Helping to ramp up the engagement behind the wheel, the fast four-door comes with an AMGForce synthesiser that pipes in V8 sound and even provides haptic feedback through the seats.

Like a Hyundai IONIQ 5 N, AMG has added its own take on the virtual gear-shifting that are operated via a pair of steering wheel-mounted paddles.

The powertrain and chassis, meanwhile, are managed by the new AMG Race Engineer system that uses one supercomputer to link the motors, braking and suspension.

With no fewer than three rotary controllers on the centre console, the driver can dial up (or down) the throttle responses, traction control and slip angles of the all-wheel drive chassis with a mind-blowing 729 different combinations.

That’s in addition to the usual five driving modes that include a Race and Drift setting.

The all-electric GT also gains the firm’s latest semi-active AMG Active Ride Control that combines three-chamber air suspension and active roll cancellation that uses hydraulically interconnected dampers.

Other advanced tech includes new rear-wheel steering that can pivot up to six degrees, boosting low-speed agility.

Keeping it stable at speed is an active rear diffuser and spoiler, plus twin underbody venturis, that are deploy at speeds above to 200km/h. All massively boost downforce.

Reining in all its might are front carbon-ceramic discs and large steel rotors at the rear that compliment the energy recuperation system that can be adjusted via steering wheel paddles.

Within, the AMG GT adopts a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster and combines it with a 14-inch infotainment system angled towards the driver and another 14-inch passenger display.

Surprisingly, given its rakish styling the latest AMG super sedan is claimed to provide plenty of leg- and headroom in the second row, while the large 507-litre boot is boosted by a further 62-litre frunk.

Mercedes-AMG has confirmed the GT 4-Door Coupe will be made at its flagship Sindelfingen plant from this July, the same factory that builds its S-Class models.

In the UK, the entry Mercedes-AMG GT 55 has been tipped to be priced from under £90,000 (A$176,000), mirroring what Porsche charges for its Taycan.
