Rolls-Royce Spirit of Ecstasy logo redesigned for EV era

The Rolls-Royce flying lady has been scaled down and redesigned for the EV world.

The so-called Spirit of Ecstasy will soon be almost 18mm shorter, dropping from 100.01mm to 82.73mm (yes, Rolls-Royce is all about details and accuracy!).

It’s also been remodelled, in part to improve its aerodynamic performance, in turn reducing the energy required to whistle her through the air.

Set to debut on the upcoming Rolls-Royce Spectre – the first EV from the uber luxury brand and a car Australians have already placed orders for – the new Spirit of Ecstasy places one leg in front of the other and has her “body tucked low”.

Rolls-Royce says he is now “a true goddess of speed, braced for wind”.

According to design director Anders Warming “she becomes lower and more focussed; braced for unprecedented speed and the exciting future her presence will define”.

The drag coefficient of the new RR logo is claimed to have been lowered to 0.26.

That’s way less than a sphere (0.5) and closing in on some of the world’s most aerodynamic cars, including the upcoming Mercedes-Benz EQS (0.20) and Tesla Model 3 (0.23). But it’s way off the quirky Aptera EV that is planned to redefine efficient motoring.

Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös says it’s all about preparing every aspect of the vehicle for the electric era.

“In her new form she is more streamlined and graceful than ever before – the perfect emblem for the most aerodynamic Rolls-Royce ever created, and for gracing the prow of our bold electric future.”

That said, each Spirit of Ecstasy “will be minutely different”, according to Rolls-Royce.

That’s because they come out of a wax casting and are then hand finished, resulting in potentially tiny changes.
