Noosa EV Expo turns it on for the electric-curious: Find out which models were most popular and check out the photo gallery

It’s something of an al fresco electric vehicle car show, the Noosa EV & Electrify Everything Expo.

Organisers lucked in to a pearler of a Noosa winter day on Sunday, where over 30 EV models across 20 different brands were on show for electric-curious locals.

With vehicles lined up along Noosa Junction’s main strip – the road closed to many an angry diesel ute driver – potential buyers could quickly hop between offerings across numerous marques, which is far less hassle than visiting individual bricks-and-mortar showrooms.

The Expo has been an annual event since 2018, and claims to be Queensland’s largest of its type, covering transport, home and business electrification.

Most interesting for me as an EV market commentator was witnessing which vehicles the attendees were swarming around.

Against buying trends, there was a decent number flirting with the Renault Scenic EV, and the all-new Subaru Trailseeker.

BMW’s new iX3 had a solid crowd around it (Noosa locals are no strangers to premium vehicles), as, expectedly, did the Tesla range.

Volkswagen’s ID. Buzz was creating quite the, er, buzz, but I did overhear one lady say it was “ridiculously expensive,” before heading in the direction of newbie Chinese players.

Of note, there were plenty of interested bodies around the Zeekr 7X and Deepal E07, and plenty of love for Polestar products.

The big automotive group player in town, Cricks Sunshine Coast, took the opportunity to showcase its EV wares. From Cricks’ 20 vehicle brands, dealer principal Dean Stuart said 17 are now electrified in some form, and had eight BEVs on display: the Skoda Enyaq, Chery E5, Subaru Trailseeker, Jaecoo J5, VW ID. Buzz, Zeekr 7X, Kia EV5 and Deepal E07.

Adding diversity, a Volvo FH Electric truck was shown, as were a variety of EV scooters, trail bikes, golf buggies, a side-by-side and even University of Queensland’s “Goose” 4WD carbon fibre electric race car, weighing a svelte 217kg.

Fortunately, attending young folk seemed more interested in this single-seat race car and displayed battery packs ready for EV conversions than they were about the e-bike test rides.

The Teslarati could become signed-up members of the Tesla Owners Australia Club ($25, includes free cap), while a BYD Shark was a decent promo ute for Noosa’s E-Foil lessons.

A lesser-spotted MG Cyberster and BMW CE-04 electric maxi-scooter also showed up, as did Noosa Council making local ratepayers well aware of its latest EV fleet.

This being Noosa, organisers couldn’t resist offering a culinary experience as a side dish to the EV stuff, with “Luc & Pascal” chefing electrically with induction cooking.

This is a neat little event that seems to get bigger and better each year. It’s just a shame the local EV charging infrastructure isn’t as well organised as the town’s expo.
