New electric pick-up trucks coming: GMC flags EV Sierra to fight the Ford F-150 Lightning

Big and electric pick-up trucks are definitely a thing, especially in the USA, where car makers are rushing to bring their huge EVs to market

New electric pick-up trucks coming include the Ford F-150 Lightning, the Hummer EV and the Chevrolet Silverado EV, and RAM has promised an electric 1500, too, as well as a smaller, HiLux-sized EV. And that’s before you count dedicated EVs, like the Tesla Cybertruck, the Rivian R1T, and many, many more.

But US giant General Motors has confirmed plans to broaden its electric reach further, announcing that its GMC truck brand would also be rumbling down the all-electric road, in the shape of what’s expected to be an EV Sierra pick-up truck.

EXCLUSIVE REPORT: EV ute overload: The electric pickup trucks coming soon

“GMC is confirming its intention to add an electric pickup truck to its portfolio in the future,” a brand spokesman told US outlet Motor Authority. “This is in addition to its already-revealed GMC Hummer EV arriving later this year.”

GM is the parent of Chevrolet, and GMC, so it’s fair to assume there will be some shared tech between the Silverado and the new Sierra model. How much, though, remains a mystery, with the brand’s executives staying tight-lipped for now.

You can expect it to share GM’s Ultium battery packs, and we know that with the Silverado, for example, the US battery tech will deliver a 650km range from its maximum 200kWh battery pack.

As far as timing? That remains a mystery, too, though US media is pointing to a 2023 or 2024 launch.

The one thing we do know? It’s unlikely to come to Australia. So to scratch your full-sized EV truck itch, look to Rivian
