Is this baby EV MG’s next big thing? 2027 MG2 teased as new rival for BYD Atto 1, Geely EX2 and Hyundai Inster

An all-new MG EV has been locked in for an unveil at the Goodwood Festival of Speed next month that is tipped to preview a small entry MG hatch that will be on sale next year.

Helping build anticipation for the firm’s new baby EV that’s expected to be dubbed MG2, MG has released two pictures of the car it plans to unwrap on the world’s most famous hill climb.

The first teaser pic reveals the MG2 will feature a snub nose that includes a pair of oval lamps with ‘b’-shaped LED graphics.

At the rear, there are thick C-pillars with an MG badge, a large tailgate spoiler and a pair of oval lamps with cross-shaped graphics.

We’ve extrapolated the two teaser pics into the artist’s impression at the top of this story.

Created to sit below the MG4 Urban in the brand’s current EV line-up, the new MG2 is expected to come with a price tag that will at least match the $23,990 plus on-roads charged for the BYD Atto 1.

Previous interviews from MG execs suggested that the MG2 will not be positioned to be as cheap as possible globally, with the Chinese SAIC-owned brand preferring to focus on value for money.

Instead of being based on the most recent front-wheel drive SAIC E3 platform, the inbound MG2 will share a shortened version of the older Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) architecture that the rear-wheel drive MG4 sits on.

While the Goodwood Festival of Speed is officially described as a “design vision”, it has been tipped the concept should be almost identical to the production car due next year.

More details will be released following its unveiling on July 9.

An Australian presenec would make sense given MG’s current focus on value EVs, including the MG4 Urban and MG S6.
