Hyundai hybrids headed down under?

Hyundai could be the next brand to add a hybrid option to the popular seven-seat segment SUV in Australia.

The Korean manufacturer has just released images and details of its updated Santa Fe and confirmed electrified models are under consideration ahead of its arrival in the next few months.

The Santa Fe, which was the number two selling light-duty large SUV in Australia behind the Toyota Kluger in 2019, is currently offered with orthodox petrol and diesel ICE drivetrains.

The Nissan Pathfinder is a direct Santa Fe competitor already with hybrid power, while the next generation Toyota Kluger will offer a hybrid version when it arrives in the first half of 2021.

The Santa Fe could potentially be available with two electrified drivetrains in Australia.

One combines a 1.6-litre petrol engine, a 44kW electric motor and a 1.5kWh battery for combined outputs of 170kW and 350Nm.

The other is a plug-in hybrid, comprising a 66kW electric motor and a 16.6kWh battery to deliver 195kW overall.

“Nothing [is] confirmed yet but we’re looking at all electrified drivetrains,” Hyundai Australia public relations senior manager Guido Schenken told carsales.com.au.

The Santa Fe’s exterior update features an enlarged 3D mesh grille, a pair of T-shaped running lamps and wider wheel arches. Inside, there’s more space, a redesigned centre console and a 10.25-inch touchscreen.

Currently, Aussie pricing for the Santa Fe starts at $43,990 and stretches to $61,660 plus on-road costs.
