Forthing Taikon 5 EV and PHEV pricing for Australia confirmed: The Jaecoo J5 has competition!

Forthing has confirmed pricing for its first Australian model, the Taikon 5, with the new Chinese brand undercutting many established rivals as it prepares to launch locally later this month.

The Ateco-backed brand’s four-model Taikon 5 range will start from $36,990 drive-away for the range-extender hybrid Luxury, rising to $42,490 drive-away for the flagship battery-electric Exclusive.

That pricing places the Taikon 5 directly in the heart of Australia’s rapidly expanding affordable electrified SUV market, taking aim at vehicles such as the popular Jaecoo J5, BYD Atto 2 and Leapmotor B10.

Unlike most rivals, the Taikon 5 will be offered with a choice of two electrified powertrains from launch: a battery-electric vehicle (BEV) and a range-extender hybrid that combines a petrol-powered generator with an electric drivetrain.

The entry-level Taikon 5 Range Extender Hybrid Luxury is priced from $36,990 drive-away, while the equivalent BEV Luxury costs $38,990 drive-away. Buyers stepping up to the Exclusive grade will pay $40,490 drive-away for the range-extender hybrid and $42,490 drive-away for the battery-electric version.

Ther warranty is seven years/200,000 kilometres (whichever occurs first). Service intervals are 12 months/15,000km (whichever occurs first) for the Range Extender Hybrid, and 12 months/20,000km (whichever occurs first) for the BEV

Battery-electric versions use a front-mounted 150kW/340Nm electric motor fed by a 64kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, delivering a claimed WLTP driving range of up to 427km.

The range-extender hybrid pairs a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a 120kW/240Nm electric motor. Forthing claims up to 170km of WLTP-rated electric driving range and a combined driving range of up to 937km. The petrol engine does not drive the wheels directly, instead acting as a generator to recharge the battery.

All variants ride on 19-inch alloy wheels and include vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, allowing owners to power external electrical devices from the vehicle battery.

Standard equipment across the range includes autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 14.6-inch infotainment touchscreen, an 8.8-inch digital instrument display and a driver’s seat with electric adjustment, ventilation and massage functions.

Exclusive variants add a panoramic glass sunroof, power tailgate, wireless phone charger, 360-degree camera system, power-folding mirrors and a six-speaker audio system.

Forthing says it has already established a dealer network covering every Australian state ahead of customer deliveries, which are due to begin later this month.
