Early mark for VW ID.4 and ID.5 as brand confirms three-model EV play in Australia

The VW ID.4 and ID.5 could be in Australia as soon as the second half of next year, with the brand pushing for an earlier production slot to get its highly anticipated electric vehicle here sooner.

Initially unlikely to arrive before 2024 – given the VW ID.4 and ID.5 weren’t due to go into right-hand-drive production for Australia until the latter part of 2023 – the brand is now hopeful it will launch both models in our market next year.

They will be followed by the VW ID.3, the brand’s city hatchback electric vehicle, which will complete a three-model EV line-up in Australia.

“They are approved for Australia, production is due for the later part of next year. The ambition is to bring that start of production forward so they’re on sale here next year,” says Volkswagen Australia’s general manager of corporate communications, Paul Pottinger. “That is what the brand is working on at the moment. By no means are we saying that’s going to happen, but that’s what we’re driving towards.”

And the brand has big plans for the ID. range here, saying they will be the country’s best-selling electric vehicles as it looks to take a “leader” position.

“We expect to be leaders in the EV space, and the market share we’re looking for in EVs is to start at 20 per cent,” says VW’s head of product for passenger vehicles, Michelle Rowney.

“When you look at VW globally, that is the positioning.”
