The most luxurious, expensive BYD ever?: Great Han arrives to challenge Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7 Series with long EV range and PHEV option

BYD has expanded its flagship Dynasty family of cars to include the all-new BYD Great Han, a full-size sedan that has been built to rival luxury limos from Europe, such as the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes S-Class.

Available with either a battery-electric or plug-in hybrid powertrain, the range-topping EV blends dual motors, 570kW and a large battery that provides 880km of range on the Chinese CLTC test cycle.

On sale later this year, the large Great Han measures an imposing 5256mm long, 1999mm wide and 1510mm tall, and comes with a stretched 3130mm wheelbase for generous levels of legroom. That means it shares its footprint with the current W223 S-Class.

The latest recipient of BYD’s Loong Face (Dragon Face) design language, the Great Han gets slim headlamps that are interlinked with a thin LED light bar.

Equipped with active aero, the Great Han comes with variable air intakes, semi-hidden door handles, smooth surfacing and a single full-width rear tail-lamp.

Mounted above the windscreen is a LiDAR sensor that will offer BYD’s latest DiPilot driver-assist technology, which works on both urban roads and highways.

It’s been noted that, catering to the typical German luxury buyer in a hurry, the dual-motor all-wheel-drive Great Han can top out at 270km/h – a high top speed for an EV, but perfect for the autobahn.

Even the entry-level rear-drive 370kW single-motor version maxes out at 240km/h and comes with an LFP battery that provides an extended 1008km range on the CLTC test cycle.

Lining up beside the two EVs is a plug-in hybrid version that combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 115kW with a 200kW electric motor and a 54.5kWh LFP battery that delivers a 370km range.

Even with a depleted battery, BYD says the big, efficient sedan can still average 4.6L/100km.

All three models will be compatible with BYD’s 1500kW Flash Charging and come with its advanced DiSus-A suspension, which also works with a height-adjustable dual-chamber air suspension and rear-wheel steering.

While sales begin in China before the end of this year, no plans have been announced for markets such as Europe or Australia, though limited demand for large, expensive sedans could hamper its chances.
