XPeng action! New Aussie distributor announces XPeng G6 update including AWD Performance

XPeng’s direct control of its Australian operations has delivered its most visible result yet, with the Chinese EV maker unveiling a heavily updated version of the G6 electric SUV that launched the brand locally less than two years ago.

The facelifted G6 is the first major product initiative announced since XPeng moved to establish its own factory-backed Australian operation following its rtakeover from former distributor TrueEV and the subsequent legal dispute between the two parties.

The move saw XPeng take direct responsibility for local sales, customer support and future model launches, signalling a long-term commitment to the Australian market.

Headline changes include a new-generation 800-volt electrical architecture capable of supporting 5C charging speeds, with XPeng claiming the G6 can recharge from 10 to 80 per cent in just 12 minutes under ideal conditions. The company describes it as the fastest-charging EV currently offered in Australia.

The G6 also gains XPILOT Assist driver assistance technology across the range, including adaptive cruise control, lane centring, automatic lane changing on selected variants, automatic parking assistance, a 360-degree camera system, summon functions and a sentry-style security mode.

Inside, XPeng has focused heavily on comfort and technology upgrades.

The new cabin features Nappa leather-appointed seats with heating, ventilation and massage functions, a new 18-speaker XOPERA 2.0 audio system, ambient lighting, a digital rear-view mirror and enhanced voice control capability. Rear-seat passengers also benefit from reclining and heated seats.

Practicality has not been overlooked, with the G6 offering 571 litres of boot space expanding to 1374L with the rear seats folded, while towing capacity is rated at up to 1500kg.

Externally, the changes are more subtle. XPeng says the updated model adopts a cleaner “starship-inspired” design with a full-width front light bar and revised detailing, while a new Black Edition will be available exclusively on the new flagship all-wheel-drive Performance grade.

The Black Edition adds black paintwork, black 20-inch wheels, black exterior trim, black badging and black brake calipers for a more aggressive appearance.

The G6 remains a crucial model for XPeng globally and locally. It was the brand’s launch vehicle in Australia under TrueEV and remains its only model currently on sale, although the larger X9 electric people mover is expected to join the line-up in coming months.

While Australian pricing and final specifications have yet to be announced, XPeng says the updated G6 will be offered in Standard Range, Long Range and new AWD Performance variants.
