GWM Ora 5 SUV lands in Australia: Is this the EV that gets this Chinese electric brand rolling in Australia?
GWM’s new Ora 5 electric SUV has generated almost 3000 expressions of interest before the first customer vehicles have reached Australian showrooms, with the initial shipment now arriving at ports around the country.
The first examples of the all-electric SUV have landed on Australia’s east coast and are expected to arrive in dealer showrooms within days, allowing prospective buyers to get behind the wheel of one of the nation’s most affordable electric SUVs.
The promising level of interest follows the Ora 5’s Australian debut at the Melbourne Motor Show in April, where GWM confirmed drive-away pricing from $33,990 for the Lux and $36,990 for the Ultra.

Those prices make it Australia’s cheapest SUV-shaped electric vehicle, undercutting key rivals including the BYD Atto 2 and Geely EX5.

The Ora 5 represents a significant expansion of GWM’s electric vehicle ambitions in Australia. While the brand has enjoyed success with its hybrid and plug-in hybrid line-up, including the Cannon Alpha PHEV and Haval H6 GT PHEV, it has lagged when it comes to EVs,.
GWM says almost 3000 expressions of interest have been lodged through its dealer network since pricing was announced, indicating decent interest in an affordable electric SUV positioned in one of Australia’s fastest-growing vehicle segments.
The Ora 5 is larger and more practical than the existing Ora hatchback and arrives as Australian buyers continue to shift towards SUV body styles, even in the electric vehicle market.

According to GWM Australia Chief Operating Officer John Kett, the company has been eager to introduce a fully electric SUV to its local range.
“The Ora 5 SUV is the perfect model to kick start GWM’s EV ambitions,” he said.
The launch also comes as GWM continues its rapid growth in Australia. The company says it currently ranks as the nation’s third-largest plug-in hybrid brand and fourth-largest hybrid brand, with the Ora 5 expected to strengthen its position in the increasingly competitive EV market.
Pricing for the GWM ORA 5 SUV is:
| Model | Price |
| ORA 5 Lux | $33,990 drive-away |
| ORA 5 Ultra | $36,990 drive-away |
