XPeng G6 range realigned in Australia: 2026 update will swing focus to performance as model expansion forecast to begin

The Australian importer of XPeng has begun outlining how it will chase sustainable growth in Australia.

The bad news for consumers is it doesn’t involve waging a price war with the likes of Tesla and a burgeoning crop of Chinese rivals.

Instead of slashing the price of its only model, the 2026 XPeng G6, that was built to rival the Tesla Model Y, current XPeng importer TrueEV says it will drop the base G6 Standard Range, that currently sells for $54,800 plus on-roads, when a facelift arrives in 2026.

In its place Jason Clarke, CEO of XPeng’s distributor TrueEV, told Australian media when the refreshed G6 arrives in Q2 (April-June) the entry model will be substituted for a powerful dual-motor G6 Performance AWD.

Producing 358kW of power, the new G6 Performance AWD variant will take just 4.1 seconds to launch from 0-100km/h.

It will also be capable of covering up to a WLTP-verified 510km on a single charge of its 80.8kWh lithium iron phosphate battery.

The same all-new battery pack, that replaces the current car’s 87.5kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) power pack will also be used for the single motor G6 Long Range.

The bad news here is its official WLTP range drops to 525km (from 570km.)

Helping make up for the deficit, the upgraded G6 comes with a punchier e-motor that produces 218kW (up 8kW) that sees the 0-100km/h dash fall to 6.2 seconds – 0.5sec quicker than before.

Upgrades for the G6 include a new full-width LED front light bar, new 20-inch wheels, a new ducktail rear spoiler and larger 15.6-inch infotainment (+0.7in) that sits within a fresh dashboard design.

Fuelling growth Down Under, TrueEV has confirmed the larger Kia Sorento-sized G9L three-row all-electric will land in showrooms before the end of next year to battle the Kia EV9, Hyundai IONIQ 9 and the Volvo EX90.

Of course, complicating these plans, is the expectation TrueEV will hand over at least some facets of Australian distribution to the XPeng factory in the near future.

Yet to be seen and set to be based on the current G9 sold in other markets, the new G9 is tipped to come with a longer wheelbase, feature a range of more than 600km and come with upgraded in-car tech.

While entry versions should bag a 258kW/465Nm rear e-motor and come with a range of up to 600km, the new flagship G9L will boast dual-motors that should produce a muscular 423kW and 695Nm of torque for a 0-100km/h dash of around 4.2 seconds.

Like the XPeng G6 charging should be among the quickest in the business.

The new G9L is set to be capable of being topped up at up to 525kW, with a 10 to 80 per cent charge taking around 12 minutes – if you can find a next-generation DC charger powerful enough.

When it arrives late in 2026 it’s thought the new XPeng G9L should be priced from around $100,000, enabling it to match rivals like the Kia EV9 (from $97,000) and the mechanically similar Hyundai IONIQ 9 (from $119,750 plus on-roads).

As well as the upgraded G6 and the addition of the G6 Performance AWD and inbound G9L, TrueEV has already confirmed that the X9 people-mover, Mona M03 sedan and P7+ large car and bigger G7 SUV are all under consideration for Australia.
