Volkswagen ID.Buzz Cargo pricing: Is this the electric delivery van that will finally tempt businesses to make the EV switch?

Volkswagen’s new ID.Buzz Cargo plans to make a big impact in the emerging EV van space with a tempting sub-$80K starting price.

The ID.Buzz Cargo – the commercial van version of the ID.Buzz people mover that is an essentially an electric version of the iconic Kombi – is priced from $79,990 plus on-road costs.

While that is a whole lot more than the Toyota Hiace ($48,886) and Hyundai Staria Load ($46,740) that dominate sales of commercial vans, it comes with the promise of much lower running costs due to its EV drivetrain.

The ID.Buzz Cargo also has lashings of style, which may not appeal to big businesses foussed on the bottom line, but it could be a drawcard for smaller businesses wanting to stand out on the road. Think mobile baristas, florists or even an electrician wanting to ram home the EV thing.

Crucially, the ID.Buzz Cargo is also competitively priced against other electric vans, the cheapest of which is the LDV eDeliver7, priced from $67,358 drive-away (or $63,990 for ABN holders).

Ford has announced pricing for its upcoming E-Transit Custom, but it’s expected to be somewhere around $70K.

Work and play: The Volkswagen ID.Buzz Cargo

The ID.Buzz Cargo is only available as a short wheelbase with a single electric motor driving the rear wheels.

It makes a healthy 210kW and 560Nm, comfortably eclipsing most diesel-powered alternatives.

The battery has 84kWh of capacity, 79kWh of which is useable.

That gives the ID.Buzz Cargo between 421km and 460km of WLTP range, depending on the configuration and which wheels are fitted (Australian figures are yet to be determined).

Speaking of which, the standard wheels are 18-inch steel units with 19-inch alloys another $3500.
