Surprise! Wild triple-motor Rivian R3X tops R2 and R3 electric SUV global reveal

Rivian has launched its all-new Rivian R2 – it’s long-awaited Tesla Model Y rival – plus a surprise smaller R3 compact SUV including a wild R3X triple-motor high-performance version that will all help it crack Europe and expand rapidly globally.

We already knew the Rivian R2 (pictured above) was incoming and will be priced from around $US45,000 ($A68,000) when deliveries begin in early 2026.

But the smaller Rivian R3 and R3X were both unexpected and signal the US brand’s intent to ramp up its volume and enter new markets.

All three are based on the same architecture, with the R2 and R3 sharing powertrain tech, including two undisclosed batteries, with the big battery designed to provide a range of more than 480km.

While the R2 is a direct Tesla Model Y alternative the R3 has more of an urban focus, so won’t be built for proper off-roading.

All models will come with undisclosed DC fast-charging that will see a 10-80 per cent top-up take less than 30 minutes.

The R3X, meanwhile, will have a performance focus and be capable of a 0-60mph (0-97km/h) dash of less than three seconds.

Entry-level single-motor rear-wheel drive versions will also be available, lowering the brand’s price point to help it compete with more affordable brands.

“I have never been more excited to launch new products – R2 and R3 are distinctly Rivian in terms of performance, capability and usability, yet with pricing that makes them accessible to a lot of people,” said Rivian Founder and CEO RJ Scaringe.

“Our design and engineering teams are extremely focused on driving innovation into not only the product features but also our approach to manufacturing to achieve dramatically lower costs.”

While reservations are now open to US buyers to place a $US100 deposit for the Rivian R2 ahead of its 2026 debut, it’s thought the smaller Rivian R3 and fast R3X won’t touchdown until 2027.

The US SUV brand has yet to confirm when it plans to launch in right-hand drive markets like the UK and Australia but it’s thought it could coincide with the debut of its small R3 in 2027.
