Hyundai confirms a city-friendly EV that will be brand’s cheapest electric vehicle

Electric vehicles could finally be about to enter the realm of the affordable, as Hyundai confirms a city-friendly EV that will be brand’s cheapest electric vehicle.

Expected to be among the cheapest electric vehicles currently available, Hyundai’s incoming all-electric city-car is targeting a circa-$35k price point, seriously undercutting the brand’s next-cheapest EV – the Ioniq Electric Elite – which lists at close to $50k.

The downside? While the brand has confirmed the vehicle is in development, it has said that a production version remains some way off, with reports pointing to a 2025 launch for what would essentially be an electrified version of the Hyundai i10 city car.

That’s the word from Hyundai in Europe, where the brand’s marketing boss, Andreas-Christoph Hofmann, told Automotive News that the city-friendly EV would need to launch at around 20,000 euros, close to $35,000 in AUD.

“Everybody in the industry knows the target of this kind of vehicle is 20,000 euros,” he said.

The new EV is only the start of Hyundai’s all-electric journey in Europe, with the brand planning eleven new electrified models by 2030.
