Honda teases new EV: Mystery electric vehicle to follow in Honda e’s tiny footsteps
Honda has begun the drip-feed of information surrounding its second fully electric vehicle, with the brand teasing a new EV that will be revealed at the Beijing motor show later this month.
Little is known about the new model for now, though based on the image we’ve seen, it looks to be bigger than the brand’s first electric effort, the Honda e city car, and will continue Honda’s electrification journey.
Whether it’s a crossover SUV, a sedan or a larger hatchback remains to be seen, but the new model clearly shares the e’s adventurous design philosophy, with the new model unlikely to look like any traditional vehicle in the Honda line-up.
The brand simply refers to it as the “EV Concept Car” that will indicate “the direction of the future mass-production model of the Honda brand’s first EV to be introduced in China”. So, not much in the way of clues there.
Whether it shares it electric powertrain with the Honda e also remains to be seen, with that vehicle equipped with a 35.5kWh battery pack and an electric motor to deliver 100kW or 113kW, and 315Nm. The driving range is a claimed 220km.
Honda has effectively ruled out the e for an Australian launch, and is yet to detail a path to electrification in this market.
Honda has recently signed a deal with GM to see new electric models ride on GM’s Ultium architecture – the same platform that underpins the new GMC Hummer. It’s also the same architecture to be used for the planned Nikola Badger ute.
