Chery confirms Lepas L6 EV: This is the Chinese giant’s fifth brand to launch in Australia, with more to come

Chery’s newest Australian brand has confirmed its first vehicle destined for our shore, the Lepas L6 mid-size SUV, is set to arrive before the end of 2026.

The all-electric SUV is due in local showrooms during the fourth quarter of 2026.

The launch marks another significant step in Chery Group’s aggressive Australian expansion, with Lepas becoming the latest addition to a growing stable of brands that already includes Chery, Omoda and Jaecoo, while off-road specialist iCaur and the newly revived Freelander brand are also confirmed for local release.

The arrival of Lepas comes as Chery Group continues its rapid rise in Australia. In May, combined sales from the Chery and Omoda Jaecoo brands reached 6971 vehicles, enough to make the company Australia’s fifth-largest automotive group for the month.

Lepas was first confirmed for Australia earlier this year as a design-led SUV brand aimed at buyers seeking a more individualistic alternative to traditional mainstream offerings.

“The Lepas L6 represents an exciting new chapter for our business and demonstrates our ongoing commitment to bringing innovative, technology-driven vehicles to Australian customers,” said Lepas Australia chief operating officer Lucas Harris.

Chery says the mid-size electric SUV has been developed with a focus on design, intelligent connectivity and family-friendly practicality.

Lepas says the L6 combines contemporary styling with a spacious cabin and premium materials, while key features include a panoramic glass roof and slim LED lighting signatures.

Power comes from a single electric motor producing up to 160kW and 275Nm. Lepas is targeting a driving range of around 450km.

While full Australian specifications and pricing remain under wraps, the L6 is expected to compete in the increasingly crowded mid-size electric SUV segment against rivals such as the Tesla Model Y, BYD Sealion 7, XPeng G6, Deepal S07 and Geely EX5.

The L6 also provides a clearer picture of Chery’s long-term ambitions in Australia. Beyond the core Chery brand, the company is rolling out a collection of distinct marques aimed at different customer groups rather than different price points.

Speaking recently about the strategy, Harris said Chery’s brands are designed to appeal to different buyer lifestyles and tastes, with Chery positioned as mainstream, Jaecoo targeting urban adventure buyers, Omoda focusing on fashion and technology, and Lepas centred on bold individualisation.

Additional Australian specifications, pricing and a confirmed launch date for the Lepas L6 will be announced closer to its local arrival.
