Buick Electra Concept is a 435kW EV that’s out of this world

American car firm Buick has thrown its electric cards on the table, unveiling the sci-fi ready Electra concept that it says will inspire its future vehicles via a new Potential Energy design philosophy.

If that’s the case, then colour us excited, because the Electra looks pretty damn fetching, from its skyward-opening butterfly front and rear doors to its curved glass roofline. In fact, the concept looks out of this world.

And not by accident, as it turns out, with the team designing the Electra to look like a space capsule (although one with a mammoth alloy wheel perched at each corner), and the brand even has the final mile problem sorted, too, fitting this vehicle with a skateboard at the rear that the owner can ride from the parking space to their final destination.

“Building on Buick’s proven leadership in electrification, the Electra represents the brand’s ambition to bring together beautiful styling and intelligent connectivity in the new era of zero emissions,” said Molly Peck, executive director of Buick Sales and Marketing at SAIC-GM.

Under all that futuristic metal, though, is some very real-world technology, with Buick raiding GM’s Ultium battery stash to deliver a range of some 660km on a single charge. Twin electric motors produce a total 435kW, too, which should see the Electra clip 100km/h in 4.3 seconds.

Designed in Shanghai, the Electra is merely a concept for now. But if this is what will feed Buick’s of the future, we’re on board.
