Polestar model rush: All-new Polestar 2 coming at “record speed”, new Polestar 4 with rear window also on the way

Polestar has revealed an all-new version of its foundation Polestar 2 will launch much earlier than expected in early 2027.

The Swedish EV brand says the next-generation Polestar 2 will be a “completely new successor” to the model that established the marque, with more than 190,000 examples sold globally.

The new Polestar 2 has now been formally slotted ahead of the Polestar 7 compact SUV, which is planned to launch in 2028.

Originally Polestar indicated the 2 would follow the 7 to market, but Polestar 2 CEO Michael Lohscheller hinted that might have only recently changed saying the new car was being brought to launch “in record speed”.

“Polestar 2 is the foundation of our brand, with over 190,000 cars sold and an enthusiastic community of customers,” he said.

“Bringing the next generation of this iconic car in record speed, by the start of next year, is very exciting.

“The car that we became known for will play a key role of our future success.

Polestar says the accelerated rollout is part of what it calls the largest model offensive in its history, with four new vehicles scheduled by 2028.

Deliveries of the four-door Polestar 5 saloon are expected to start from mid-2026, followed by a new estate variant of the Polestar 4 – currently the brand’s best-seller – with deliveries due to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026.

The additional Polestar 4 variant is described as being based on the same technology as the current car but aimed at a broader customer base by offering “more versatility”, suggesting it will have a more off-road skew.

Teaser photography shows it has a glass rear window rather than the controversial solid deck.

“Polestar 4 coupé is our current best-seller,” said Lohscheller.

“Already by the end of this year, we will launch a new variant of Polestar 4, based on the same great technology. With this car, Polestar will once again set new standards.

“Sweden is famous for its estate cars, and its SUVs are world-class. We are combining the space of an estate and the versatility of an SUV with the dynamic performance that is Polestar.”

While Polestar has not yet detailed the platform or key specifications for the next-generation Polestar 2, it has made clear this is not a facelift.

The company says it will be a clean-sheet replacement, suggesting major changes under the skin as well as a fresh approach to software, efficiency and battery technology as EV competition.

The Polestar 7 will cap off the model rush.

“With Polestar 7 we are entering the largest EV segment in Europe, he compact SUV segment, which accounts for approximately one-third of total BEV volumes in 2025,” said Lohscheller.

“We are convinced that we can offer customers a progressive performance-driven car for a very attractive price point, built in Europe.”

The strengthened product cadence comes at a critical time for Polestar, which has faced well-documented financial pressures over the past two years.

The company has undertaken cost-cutting programs, sought additional funding support and worked to improve margins as it transitions from a single-model line-up to a broader global portfolio.

In 2025 Polestar recorded a 34 per cent global sales lift to a still modest 60,119 and 38.5 per cent locally (to 2373) to become the fastest growing premium brand in Australia.

In its latest update, Polestar said it expects low double-digit retail volume growth in 2026 aided by a planned 30 per cent expansion of its retail network.

The company said it is targeting “profitable growth and operational improvement” as the expanded model range comes online.

”2025 was a year of continuous operational progress and delivery,” said Lohscheller. “With our attractive model line-up, strong shareholder support and partners with access to the latest technology, Polestar is set to become one of the winners of the automotive industry’s transformation.”
