VW’s affordable EV offensive! New ID.Cross compact SUV makes global debut: VW ID.Polo, Skoda Epiq and Cupra Raval to join it on-sale in 2026

A “near production” compact electric SUV concept has led a four car Volkswagen Group affordable EV roll-out at a Munich motor show preview overnight.

Joining the five-door five-seat ID.Cross on the stage for its global debut were its non-identical twin the Skoda Epiq SUV and production versions of the Volkswagen ID.Polo and Cupra Raval hatchbacks, albeit still in camouflage wraps.

Jointly dubbed ‘the electric car urban family’, these four are based on VW’s new MEB+ electric car platform, have up to 450km range and will come with a China-fighting pricing as low as 25,000 Euros ($45,000 approx). They all are scheduled to start rolling out in Europe in 2026.

Along with sharp pricing, VW says new-generation software will enable high-end equipment such as travel assist with lane change, traffic light recognition, LED matrix headlights, intelligent park assist, massage seats, a 360 degree camera, a digital key and an infotainment system with over 100 apps.

All four cars are to be built in Spain with VW’s Spanish subsidiaries Seat and Cupra credited as being project leaders.

The ID.Cross Concept will go on-sale in Europe as the ID.Cross before the end of 2026.

It presents a new VW design language called ‘Pure Positive’ that includes a smiling front-end 3D light signature. The concept also rolls on 21-inch alloys fitted with Goodyear tyres that continue the wheel design into sidewall.

A similar size to the Volkswagen T-Cross compact petrol SUV sold in Australia, the concept measures up at 4161mm long, 1839mm wide and 1588mm tall with a 2601mm wheelbase.

Inside, there are seats that fold-down completely flat, fabric trims, a floating centre console, an 11-inch digital instrument cluster, a 13-inch central touchscreen, a redesigned squircle steering wheel and – importantly given VW’s recent trauma with haptic controls – physical buttons. Storage includes a 450 litre boot and a 25 litre frunk.

The concept drives the front wheels via a new powertrain, comprising a 155kW e-motor and a high voltage battery with an unstated capacity. The WLTP range for the concept is 420km.

The Skoda Epiq was seen in Munich for the first time as a physical concept rather a com-gen. A 425km range and a 475 litre boot were revealed in Munich, but not much more.

However, technical specifications should be very close to the ID.Cross, which it will be built alongside in Pamplona.

Epiq will be the smallest and cheapest Skoda EV, sitting under the Elroq and Enyaq and alongside the petrol Kamiq. It will also be the first production model to fully encapsulate the brand’s new ‘Modern Solid’ design language.

Named after a Barcelona suburb El Raval, the Cupra Raval hatchback will also be the sports-focussed brand’s smallest EV. It is expected to be very similar in size and specification to the ID.Polo, which it will be built alongside in Martorell.

The ID.Polo, which is 108mm shorter than the ID.Cross, was until last week known as the ID.2. It changes its badge as a result of VW’s decision to now use its best-known names on its EVs. Polo has been in continuous service for VW through multiple small car generations since 1975.

The ID.Polo will be joined by an electric ID.Polo GTI hot hatch in 2026. The Raval is expected to have a VZ-badged model that shares the hot VW hatch’s running gear.

Yet another Volkswagen-badged MEB+ electric vehicle not included in the Munich preview is the ID.EVERY1 concept, which will be the smallest and cheapest of the four VW-badged entry-level EVs when it makes production.
