Hyundai Ioniq 9 pricing and spec announced: Electric family SUV will be offered in Australia as one expensive model

Only well-heeled families are going to be able to afford the new Hyundai Ioniq 9 three-row electric SUV in Australia, with just one high-priced and highly-specified model on offer.

On-sale now and priced from $119,750 plus on-road costs, the Ioniq 9 Calligraphy is the most expensive model Hyundai has yet sold in Australia.

Pricing climbs beyond $140,000 if all the options on offer are selected.

The Ioniq 9 Calligraphy  will come as a 314kW/700Nm dual motor all-wheel drive and 600km WLTP range courtesy of a 110.3kWh battery pack.

This is a very different strategy to Kia, which offers its twin-under-the-skin EV9 three row electric SUV in three specs from $97,000 to $121,000 starting with the Air rear-wheel drive.

But then Hyundai’s probably paid plenty of attention to the EV9 sales, with just 165 sold in Australia in the first six months of 2025.

“As our first three-row, all electric SUV, IONIQ 9 is a milestone vehicle, underscoring Hyundai’s EV leadership and our continuing commitment to innovation,” said Hyundai Motor Company Australia Chief Executive Officer, Don Romano.

“IONIQ 9 blends lounge-like space, distinctive aerodynamic design, and an advanced user experience to create a captivating and luxurious family vehicle,” he said.

The pricing of the Ioniq 9 in Australia flies in the face of the strategy of Hyundai Canada, the market Romano previously oversaw and only recently transferred from.

There the Ioniq 9 is available in multiple trims starting from the equivalent of $67,000 (approx).

The Calligraphy’s powertrain comprises two 157kW/350Nm e-motors that combine to push the 2.7 tonne (approx) SUV from 0-100km/h in just 5.2 seconds.

The Ioniq 9’s 800V E-GMP platform provides DC charging for the battery from 10 to 80 per cent in as little as 24 minutes.

Underpinning the 5.0m-long (approx) Ioniq 9 is a 3130mm wheelbase with MacPherson strut front- and multi-link rear-suspension mated with a self-levelling damper system.

The Calligraphy is offered with a choice of seven-seat or optional (+$2000) six-seat configurations, the latter offering a sliding ‘universal island’ centre console and powered relaxation seats for second-row passengers. Digital mirrors add a further $3000.

Other standard equipment include integrated 12.3-inch instrument and infotainment displays, Nappa leather, relaxation front seats, a power panorama sunroof, column shifting and active noise cancellation.

Seat heating and ventilation is standard in the first two rows, while the third row power folds and reclines.

Making their debut with this car are smartphone-based Digital Key 2 and Google Places Search, which provides drivers with multiple ways to search for destinations. Drivers can use text search to find places based on a specific text string, such as ‘restaurants near me’.

A five year Bluelink Connected Car subscription and Over The Air updates are also included in the Ioniq 9.

Safety equipment includes 10 Airbags and Hyundai’s SmartSense driver assist suite, including Forward Collision Avoidance 2 with pedestrian and cyclist detection, Lane Following Assist 2 and Smart Cruise Control 2 among much more.

The aerodynamically-shaped exterior of Ioniq 9 includes Parametric Pixel headliughts, 21-inch alloy wheels and the choice of 10 exterior colours (Optional choices are $750-$1000). Inside there are a selection of colour and trim combinations.

Cargo space with all three rows upright is 308 litres, expanding to 908 litres with row three collapsed. A frunk adds further storage.
