Tesla Model Y Juniper undercut on price again! Meet the Cupra Tavascan, a Spanish Volkswagen out to carve its place in the medium EV segment
The 2025 Cupra Tavascan will be priced from $60,990 plus on-road costs when sales begin in Australia this April, two years after its global debut.
Available in rear-drive Endurance ($60,990 plus ORCs) trim and the flagship dual-motor VZ ($74,490), the cheapest new Cupra Tavascan is not only cheaper than the new facelifted Tesla Model Y Launch Edition ($63,490 plus ORCs) but also the closely-related Skoda Enyaq (priced from $69,990 plus ORCs).
Positioned only $1000 more than the Born hatch (with discounts) in the Cupra range, the new Tavascan is also more affordable than the Formentor VZe plug-in hybrid ($64,490).
You’ll find state-by-state Tavascan drive-away pricing at the bottom of this story.

Choose the base Tavascan Endurance and it comes with a single e-motor that produces 210kW and 545Nm of torque and drives the rear wheels.

Off the line, the sporty Cupra launches from 0-100km/h in just 6.8 seconds, some way off the 5.9sec it takes for the base rear-drive Model Y to reach the same benchmark.
Powered by a 77kWh battery, Cupra claims the entry Tavascan can cover a WLTP-verified 534km on a charge, which is 68km more than the Tesla can.
The dual-motor Tavascan VZ boosts total power to 250kW that drops the 0-100km/h sprint to 5.5 seconds, with the range dropping to 499km.
In Australia owners can opt for the additional $8000 Extreme pack that adds forged 21-inch alloy wheels and a set of grippier performance tyres and Nappa leather ventilated Cup Racing front seats.
However, the range falls to 463km.
Whichever you choose, the battery of the new Tavascan can be topped up using a DC fast charger up to a rate of 135kW, with a 10 to 80 per cent recharge taking less than 30 minutes.
Standard equipment for the cheaper of the two Tavascan variants includes 19-inch alloy wheels, a large 15-inch infotainment that works with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, LED exterior lamps and a gesture-activated tailgate.
Safety equipment includes autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitor, front and rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, plus auto high-beam and front and rear parking sensors.
From launch, an optional $4500 Interior pack will be offered that adds 20-inch alloy wheels, a 360-degree camera, dark blue microfibre electric heated front seats, a 12-speaker Sennheiser sound system, ambient lighting and illuminated kick plates.

Choose the faster Tavascan VZ and Cupra throw in 21-inch black and copper alloy wheels, matrix LED lamps, auto high-beam, a panoramic roof, 360-degree camera, dark blue microfibre heated electric seats and the 12-speaker Sennheiser sound system, ambient lighting and illuminated kick plates.
The Cupra comes with either White Silver or Atacama Desert hues, with Tavascan Blue and Basalt Grey priced at $800.
When the Cupra Tavascan is introduced this April it will be covered by a five-year/unlimited kilometre warranty, with the battery covered by a n eight-year/160,000km warranty.
Services for the battery-electric Tavascan are due every 12 months or 15,000km, with a three-year service plan available for $990.
