Seven-seat 2025 Hyundai IONIQ 9 EV teased, primed to tackle prestige brands and Kia EV9

Hyundai has teased shadowy images of its flagship 2025 Hyundai IONIQ 9 ahead of the three-row electric SUV’s full reveal later this month.

Originally set to be called IONIQ 7, Hyundai switched to IONIQ 9 at the last minute when concerns were raised some might think it a lesser car than the closely-related Kia EV9. These sister SUVs share the group’s E-GMP EV architecture.

Full details have yet to be released, but it’s almost certain the IONIQ 9 will share the Kia EV9’s powertrains. In entry-level, that means a single e-motor producing 160kW and 350Nm, and combined with a 76.1kWh battery for range of around 450km.

Pricier versions will employ dual-motors for all-wheel drive and produce around 283kW and 700Nm. Combined with a 99.8kWh battery, range of 510+km is expected, plus a 0-100km/h time of around 6.0 seconds.

If you crave bonkers giant EV performance, the IONIQ 9 will gain a high-performance N version that will muster around 478kW and 770Nm, ensureing a 0-100km/h in around 4.0 seconds.

All will share concept car looks first shown on the 2021 Hyundai Seven EV, with the large electric SUV boasting smooth, curvy styling. Sadly, rear-hinged frameless doors will be dropped for more conventional openings.

Hyundai’s signature pixel lights front and rear will likely feature in abundance, following the trend of all its EVs.

Within, it’s hotly tipped the new seven-seat IONIQ 9 will adopt a cabin largely based on the latest Santa Fe’s, with its full digital instrument cluster and large infotainment shared with the combustion-powered SUV.

Other common elements will be physical controls for both audio and climate control, and the twisting dial gear selector on the steering column.

Originally scheduled to be introduced in the second half of 2024, the IONIQ 9 won’t now land in Australia until early 2025.

The large all-electric SUV is set to be the most expensive model the Korean brand has ever sold, meaning it will surpass the $111,000 (plus on-roads) charged for the hot IONIQ 5 N.

For comparison, some IONIQ 9 versions may cost near to the all-new 2025 Volvo EX90, which is tipped to be priced from $125,000 when it arrives next year.
