“Multiple cars, multiple homes to park them in, and not worried about range”: Meet Australia’s first Porsche Taycan buyers

The Porsche Taycan is now officially on sale in Australia, which means we are also able to take a glimpse at the first Australian Taycan buyers, with the brand describing the types of people plonking down deposits as “owning multiple cars, with multiple homes to park them in, and they’re not interested about range”.

So what are they interested in, you might well ask? According to Porsche: “they’re only thinking ‘is this a true Porsche sports car?'”.

Porsche is confident demand is strong, but won’t reveal its sales targets. But EV Central understands that between 300 and 400 Taycan models are likely to sell in Australia each year. In fact, orders for Australia’s most expensive EV already running hot for 2021 (and as a result the brand is encouraging anyone keen to get their hands on one to visit a Porsche dealership with haste).

Who are these early adopters of Porsche’s first EV family?

“It’s hard to put them into buckets, but there are two distinct groups – Porsche owners buying their first EV, and EV owners buying their first Porsche,” says Porsche Australia spokesperson, Chris Jordan.

“There are the hardcore, long-term Porsche owners who can’t wait to get one of these, and they’re the sort of people who surprise you – people you think would be hardcore petrol heads, and they’re buying their first car without petrol.

“A lot of those guys might have a GT2, GT3, or GT3 RS, and they can’t wait to get this car. And they’re not necessarily about the trade in.

“Then on the other side, there are just the people who are really interested in EVs, and want to get into this car as well. Those are the two distinct groups.”

One thing both sets of Porsche Taycan buyers appear to have in common, though, is the fact the question isn’t whether to install a home fast-charger, but rather, how many homes to install a fast charger in.

“About 20 per cent of order holders to date are sizing up more than one (home) location for chargers, whether it’s a holiday house, second home, or workplace” Mr Jordan says.
