Electric Kombi camper revealed: Volkswagen ID. California Cruise sleeps two, powers a campsite and runs its climate control for 48 hours

The Volkswagen ID. Buzz has been transformed into an electric campervan, with the new ID. California Cruise combining sleeping accommodation for two with vehicle-to-load power and climate control that can operate for up to 48 hours.

Revealed at the 2026 Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf, the ID. California Cruise is the first battery-electric model to officially join Volkswagen’s California campervan family.

European prices start from €60,761 – equivalent to about $108,000 at current exchange rates – with the first deliveries scheduled for early 2027.

An Australian launch is yet to be confirmed, but the regular ID. Buzz on which the California Cruise is based is already sold here in short- and long-wheelbase forms.

The ID. California Cruise is more minimalist weekender than fully equipped motorhome, with no pop-up roof, kitchen, sink or permanently installed refrigerator.

Instead, it adds a specially developed folding sleeping system featuring a 2.03-metre-long and 1.20m-wide bed.

A nine-centimetre-thick folding comfort mattress is included, along with ventilation grilles for the front side windows, blackout blinds for every window, two camping chairs and a camping table.

A separate blind is included when the optional panoramic glass roof is fitted, while all the camping components can be stored inside the vehicle when they are not required.

Volkswagen has also developed a dedicated California camping mode that controls selected lighting and comfort functions, provides continuous power to the USB ports and prepares the cabin for sleeping.

The climate-control system can continue heating or cooling the interior for up to 48 hours, although Volkswagen says the actual operating time will depend on the battery’s state of charge and the temperature difference between the cabin and outside air.

Another significant camping feature is the vehicle-to-load system, which can draw electricity from the ID. Buzz’s high-voltage battery to power external appliances.

It provides a continuous output of up to 2000 watts and a peak output of 3.6kW through Volkswagen’s PowerSocket discharge adaptor.

Volkswagen says that is sufficient to run equipment including a coffee machine, kettle, portable electric cooktop, refrigerator or cool box, lighting, mobile workstation and chargers for electric bicycles and scooters.

The California App has also been upgraded for electric models, adding journey planning that incorporates suitable charging stations along a chosen route.

Plug & Charge compatibility allows charging to begin automatically at compatible public chargers once the cable is connected, without requiring separate authentication at the charging point.

The ID. California Cruise is based on the rear-wheel-drive ID. Buzz Pro and will be offered in both short- and long-wheelbase configurations.

Volkswagen has not detailed its battery capacities, driving ranges, outputs or charging speeds, although the underlying ID. Buzz Pro is offered with different battery specifications depending on the body length and market.

Standard equipment added over the regular ID. Buzz includes the Interior Style and Comfort packages, the camping equipment and the PowerSocket V2L adaptor.

The California Cruise is distinguished externally by California lettering across the rear and Cruise decals along its flanks. Inside, it receives exclusive Miwo upholstery incorporating the California name.

While it is the first production electric California, Volkswagen says it is also the starting point for a broader battery-powered campervan family.

Further electric California models will be added progressively by 2028, potentially expanding beyond the Cruise’s relatively simple two-person sleeping arrangement.

The California name dates back to 1988, although the factory-built Volkswagen campervan was not officially sold in Australia until the T6.1 California Beach Limited Edition arrived in late 2020.

That initial allocation was limited to 30 vehicles before the California Beach became a regular part of Volkswagen’s Australian commercial-vehicle range.

The regular ID. Buzz is currently priced from $79,990 drive-away in short-wheelbase Pro form and $84,990 drive-away as a long-wheelbase Pro.

Predictably at this early stage, Volkswagen’s Australian outpost is non-commital about the California’s Aussie chanbces.

“We are continually reviewing our product portfolio for the Australian market. While we recognise the interest in the Volkswagen ID. California Cruise, we are unable to confirm local availability or timing at this stage for Australia,” a spokesman told us in a written statement.
