Charge it! Free Evie top-ups for 12 months on MG 4, MG S5, MG IM5 and IM6… if you drive very, very frugally

MG Motor Australia has announced its entire range of electric cars is now eligible for free Evie public fast charging.

There are a couple of catches though. Firstly, the deal is only on new vehicles bought from October 1 until December 31 2025.

So don’t go rocking in to your local MG dealer with your 2024 MG ZS EV expecting to collect the offer.

And while the deal is being pitched as lasting 12 months, charging is capped at 1000kWh. So you’re going to have to be do plenty of home charging or be pretty frugal in your driving to stretch that allocation into late 2026.

Encouragingly though, at least this promotion won’t hammer resale value by dropping the new car price, a tactic MG often employs.

Available on the MG 4 hatch, MG S5 EV SUV and the firm’s new premium brand’s IM5 sedan and IM6 SUV, the Evie voucher handed over when you take delivery of your new pride and joy allows owners to plug-in at Evie’s 360 fast-charging locations and 1000 charging bays.

While the new Evie incentive includes MG’s full EV range, it specifically excludes the Chinese car-maker’s plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Government, rental and rideshare buyers are also excluded from the new offer which is only available to private and fleet buyers.

The new offer means that owners of the MG IM5 and IM6 SUV with the 100kWh battery should be entitled to up to 20 refills (30 to 80 per cent) for up to 5050km of free driving.

Drivers of the S5 EV with the smaller 42kWh battery will be able to plug-in for more than 40 top-ups, allowing up to 6930km of driving without having to pay for fast DC charging.

Those calculations use the WLTP efficiency figures as a guide.

When it comes to working out how much money owners will save, it’s not so simple, with Evie charging 50c to 58c per kW for chargers on a 50W outlet and 60 to 68c/kW for top-ups up to 150kW.

That means the charging is worth something like $600 of fast charging electricity.

However, you can almost halve that for regular home charging and if you’ve signed up to an EV charging plan the equivalent value is something $100.

Commenting on the new offer, MG Motor Australia Business Director Stuart Mitchell said:

“MG Motor Australia believes that EVs should be within reach for all Aussies, not just in terms of affordability, but also in how easy they are to own and run.

“We’re making it even easier for our customers to enjoy the benefits of electric driving from day one, with 12 months of complimentary charging on us.”
