MG GO! concept revealed: Previews MG2 EV hatch to rival BYD Atto 1 and Geely EX2

The baby MG2 all-electric hatchback has been previewed ahead of its 2027 debut, following the MG GO! concept’s unveiling at last weekend’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Previewing the production EV that will arrive in the second half of next year, the Chinese-owned British brand said the MG GO! was “more than a glimpse [at] a future new B-segment electric hatchback”, suggesting that the majority of the small five-door’s styling will carry over.

Designed to compete with the BYD Atto 1’s low price ($23,990 plus on-road costs) Down Under, expect the production car to drop the GO!’s large wheels, side skirts, slim door mirrors and aggressive front splitter.

Claimed to have been inspired by the MGB GT (1965-1980), the MG Metro Turbo (1982-1989) and the much later MG ZR (2001-2005), the MG2 has been created to attract a more youthful audience than the MG4 Urban.

Featuring a snub nose and a pair of Mini-style round headlamps, the curvy MG2 is set to keep the hidden rear door handles and vertical rear lamps, although the massive diffuser will be dropped.

Inside, it’s possible the MG2 will carry over the large 12.8-inch touchscreen from the MG4, as well as its seven-inch digital instrument cluster, but offer physical buttons, including dials for the climate control, in the wake of new regulations designed to cut driver distraction caused by large touchscreens.

Instead of being based on the more recent front-wheel-drive SAIC E3 platform, the inbound MG2 will share a shortened version of the older Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) architecture that underpins the rear-wheel-drive MG4.

It’s likely the MG2 will come with either the 41.9kWh or 52.8kWh batteries offered in the MG4 Urban – or both – with the larger power pack set to offer a range of around 450km.

While not explicitly locked in for our market, it’s thought MG’s local outfit will bring the MG2 to Australia, although in previous interviews MG executives have suggested the MG2 will not be positioned to be as cheap as possible globally.

Instead, the Chinese SAIC-owned brand will focus on a well-equipped model that offers decent value for money.
