Jeepers Ford! The frunk is now a $700 option for the 2026 Mustang Mach-E!

There’s bad news for buyers of the lightly updated 2026 Ford Mustang Mach-E in the US, as it no longer comes equipped with a standard frunk.

Instead, US buyers are being asked to splash out a hefty US$495 ($700) for the extra storage space.

Justifying charging more for the extra front boot, Ford says the decision to remove it from the standard equipment list was because current customers simply weren’t using it.

Removing it helps the car giant slash costs, with the savings claimed to be passed on to consumers.

Adding some credibility to that claim, in the US the upgraded 2026 Mustang Mach-E GT is around US$1000 ($1400) cheaper than the model it replaces, although the entry model is priced around the same as before.

Other evidence of cost-cutting for Ford’s Tesla Model Y rival includes the loss of front seat map pockets, while the US-only Mach-E Rally rear spoiler becomes an option.

Positive changes include rear doors that gain physical door handles, providing an easier way to tug the door open than before, which required owners to press the door button and then awkwardly grab the door edge.

There’s no word on when the revised Mustang Mach-E will arrive in Australia, but the facelifted version of the Ford EV arrived late last year priced from $65,990 (+$1000) for the entry Select version, $80,490 (+$500) for the Premium and $98,490 (+$500) for the Mustang Mach-E GT.

In that car the frunk dropped in size because of the additon of a heat pump.
