Tesla opens Australia’s largest Supercharger station! Goulburn site boasts 20 300kW V4 chargers

Tesla has announced it has opened a new 20-strong Supercharger site in Goulburn, New South Wales, claimed to be the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere.

Located on the Hume Highway between Sydney and Canberra, the new Supercharger station can be found on Lockyer Street close to the iconic Big Merino landmark.

That’s on the south side of the city in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales and just off the Hume Freeway, the main connector between Sydney and Melbourne.

The Goulburn Superchargers are available to all CCS2 compatible EVs, with charging rates capped at $0.52/kWh for Tesla vehicles and $0.73/kWh for EVs from other brands.

Tesla also charges idle fees of up to $1 per minute if you mistakenly leave your car plugged in after it’s fully charged.

The new site is in addition to the nearby Sloane Street site (eight Superchargers) located in town less than 4km away.

The 16-stall Supercharger site in Albury that was opened back in December 2023 was previously Tesla’s largest charging facility in the region.

Back in May Chinese EV start-up XPeng said it had plans to roll out its very own network of fast DC chargers Down Under that are capable of topping up EVs at up to 480kW.

There’s no word on how many XPeng chargers it plans to introduce Down Under, nor wen it will start or what will be its strategy when it comes to placement.

XPeng has announced, however, that its only current Australian model, the G6 electric SUV, is now compatible with V3 and V4 400V Superchargers following  the rollout of Tesla’s 2025 firmware update.

While Tesla remains Australia’s favourite EV brand in a crowded marketplace, the first seven months of this year have been bruising for the US car-make.

Sales have dropped to 15,063 vehicles, marking a 41.4 per cent fall on the same period in 2024.

If that’s not bad enough for the EV pioneers, last month a lack of supply meant Model Y and Model 3 deliveries dropped to 555 of its mid-size SUV and 362 of its sedans.

That elevated the BYD Sealion 7 to Australia’s best-selling EV, as the Chinese brand recorded 1427 sales of its new mid-size SUV.

  • The new Tesla Supercharger site follows on from a NSW state government July announcement that it would be subsidising the installation of 549 new kerbside EV chargers.

The NSW Government’s $2.8 million in EV Kerbside Charging Grants have been awarded to five recipients who will contribute another $2.2 million in private investment to install 549 chargers across 130 suburbs.
